Newcastle United star could now join European giants in bargain deal in 2021 – Report

According to reports in Italy, Inter Milan are eyeing up the signing of Newcastle United centre-back Fabian Schar next summer.

This comes from Tuttosport, who report that the Serie A giants have identified the 28-year-old as one of their top defensive targets heading into 2021 – and hope to sign him on a free.

The Swiss international is now entering the final six months of his contract at St James’ Park, meaning he can leave the club on a Bosman should no new deal come his way before the end of the season.

For me, Schar is one of several players who’ve gone backwards under Steve Bruce, with him comfortably one of our classiest players under Rafa Benitez.

Saying that, it’s almost felt like his head has been elsewhere over the past six months, with him putting in some awful displays during Project Restart.

Since then, a combination of lacklustre displays and unfortunate injuries have seen him start just four of our 13 Premier League games so far this season.

Not only that, his prolonged absence over the past fortnight suggests he’s been one of those struck down by Covid, with reports in Switzerland stating that he’d been stuck in self-isolation the week leading up to our 2-1 win over West Brom.

It feels like this will be his last season at St James’ Park no matter what, however it would be poor business from our point of view if we allowed him to leave for nothing.

Providing we can sign a replacement, I wouldn’t be surprised if he left at a cut-price fee next month.
