Andy Carroll – I’m sorry, but I just don’t get it…

Apparently Big Andy was furious about not getting an opportunity to change things against a vulnerable Leeds defence on Wednesday night – so much so he was seen to be very animated in his displeasure on the bench when Miggy went on.

Add in the fact that it’s now been a month since he saw any action on the pitch and perhaps you can understand his frustration and annoyance. Well, perhaps you can but I can’t. I said it when it happened and I’ve said it a couple of times since. What is he still doing at the club?

How on earth did his efforts last season warrant a new contract and a deny someone else a place in the 25-man squad this season. I just don’t get it. If anything, he’s looked worse this season than last when given a chance. I actually think he’s lucky to make the bench.

His lack of goals, lack of mobility and lack of appearances stack up against him particularly at a time where the squad needs trimming to bring people in next month. It’s actually criminal when you think about it.

And it may be that he’s never going to get on if Bruce doesn’t think he’s worth playing against a Leeds side who were clearly woeful from set pieces and have been seen to struggle against a physical ariel presence this season.

All I can think of is that he’s big and a Geordie and that cuts him more slack than I personally believe he’s entitled to. Especially when you look at how long Dwight Gayle was missing for and the impact he made when he came back and on last Saturday.

Almost an “Andy Carroll” goal to be honest and straight back on the scoring charts in no time at all. Gayle has five goals in his last nine Premier League appearances. Carroll hasn’t scored in the Premier for over three years.

Elsewhere, it’s crazy to think Sean Longstaff seemed to have the world at his feet before a knee injury at West Ham 18 months ago.

Talk of a £25m+ move to Man. United and even a place in the England squad. After Wednesday’s performance, you have to wonder whether he too is fortunate to be selected in Bruce’s matchday squad? Look, I get that he’s a Geordie as well and is recovering from that injury and above all else, he’s still young unlike Carroll.

So, Longstaff I will give a bit more slack too but he is another that is not performing at the moment. I do temper that by saying he’s not the only one, but he needs to improve quickly otherwise he could be another local lad gone wrong.

  2. At least Andy didn’t cost £40m how many goals has Jo scored? Andy wins more balls in the air and can lay off a pass when under pressure,
He is slow now but for type of game we play long ball up the middle he is a good target to help Wilson
