Steve Bruce drops new transfer hint when asked for a January update by Alan Shearer

Steve Bruce confirmed after last night’s 0-0 draw with Liverpool that the club are working on “one or two” deals they’re hoping to pull off in January.

He also dropped a clear hint as to the sort of signings we’ll be looking at, immediately naming loans as an avenue we’re looking down in a bid to improve our squad.

As we know, we signed three players until the end of the season this time last year as Bentaleb (Schalke), Rose (Spurs) and Lazaro (Inter Milan) arrived – and Bruce reckons we might just have a couple of similar deals in the pipeline this time around.

Here’s what the NUFC boss said when Amazon Prime pundit Alan Shearer asked if he has any deals lined up ahead of the January transfer window:

“We’ve got one or two things (going on).

“We all know how difficult January is. Last year we brought in three loan signings which really, really helped us.

“That’s an avenue we’ll go down.

“It’s very, very difficult to go and get a loan player who can come in straight away and improve you.

“You usually get them in January because they haven’t been playing or they’ve fallen out with someone!

“We’ll scour the market.

“We’ve got one or two things we might progress and if it improves us we’ll try and be in a position to act.”

Bruce’s latest hint at loans fits in with some of the reports emerging over the past week, with The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards stating that he’ll have little (if any!) to spend and will instead be relying on temporary deals.

Although we brought in one from the Bundesliga and another from Serie A in last season’s January window, most of the names that’ve been linked with short-term moves to St James’ Park have been those struggling for game time at ‘big six’ sides in the Premier League.

This include Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones and Brandon Williams of Manchester United, Chelsea’s Fikayo Tomori and even Tottenham’s Dele Alli – although it’s already been said that the latter’s wage demands will already rule out any move north for him!
