It seems many Newcastle fans believe that we should look to sign a central midfielder in the January transfer window, with the possibility of a new right-back also popular.
With the January window now open, it’s been hinted in the media that Mike Ashley will hand limited funds to Steve Bruce and leave us mainly relying on loans.
A tweet I put out last week asked Toon fans what position we should be looking to strengthen, with the suggestion that we should try and buy a quality, modern day right back who would greatly improve our side:
While most agreed on the right back situation, many supporters also felt the arrival of a new central midfielder was even more essential – an area where we have been outfought for most of the season.
The need for a box-to-box midfielder was specifically highlighted by some, with Newcastle not really having a player of that mould since Mo Diame left the club in 2019.
Matty Longstaff has bundles of energy and has done well in our last two, but someone able to “drive with the ball” would give us something we’ve never had since Bruce walked through the door.
A game changer in midfield would be a serious addition – if allowed to play in a system that would suit his style.
Shelvey and Hayden are tried and tested Premier League players. The former especially has shown his ability to pick out a pass, albeit with some negative sides to his game too. However, if we could sign a player of Shelvey’s quality but with increased mobility that would add a whole new dimension to our team (similar mould to Yohan Cabaye, perhaps?). We just don’t win the midfield battle enough or have anyone dynamic enough to unsettle opposition engine rooms.
Let us know what area you’re keen to see us strengthen this month!
