Alan Shearer names the January signing Newcastle United should prioritise this month

Alan Shearer has called for the Newcastle board to bring in a midfielder in the January transfer window.

A box-to-box midfield player is high on the wish list of most Toon supporters now the window is open, with a sense of mutual agreement among our fanbase that this is an area we should improve upon.

Shearer was speaking as a pundit for Amazon Prime following our gritty 0-0 draw with champions Liverpool on Wednesday night, responding to Steve McManaman suggesting another striker is what we should look to bring in.

Here is what he said after the game:

“I would like two or three players, not just one.

“If you’re only allowing one then I would line somebody with a bit of legs in the midfield to get up and get near Callum Wilson and have that bit of creativity in the final third.”

These comments came after a 90 minutes in which Matty Longstaff demonstrated his capabilities as an energetic presence in the middle of the park.

His lack of experience probably gets himself overlooked as an option for the here and now, but he has held his own against the best two sides in the league in the space of a few days.

I would still agree with Shearer that we lack a real talisman in the middle of the park, but I feel as though a top quality right back would be a bigger improvement to the side. Ironically, I say this after Yedlin also put in one of his best performances in a Toon shirt for a couple of years!

  1. So the article says “Alan Shearer names who he thinks we should go for” and nowhere in the article or video does Shearer actually name anyone.
    Rubbish article.

  2. Yedlin is playing to get out of there and we need a box to box mid a striker who actually can score goals and a leftback who can go forward and put decent crosses in
