Steve Bruce identifies ‘dynamic midfielder’ as his top January transfer priority – Report

Steve Bruce has identified the signing of a ‘dynamic central midfielder’ as his top transfer priority this month, according to the Shields Gazette.

We have been linked with full-backs, centre-backs and the odd attacker over the past few months, but Liam Kennedy insists that we are focusing most of our attentions on our engine room – and area that has been overrun and outmanoeuvred on too many occasions this season.

That said, a box-to-box midfielder who’s better than our current crop won’t be easy to find when we look set to be restricted to loans.

Bruce turned to Schalke’s Nabil Bentaleb this time last year, however he’ll be hoping to learn from his mistakes on that front after the Algerian did anything but shore us up in the middle of the park.

Hayden is a ball winner, Shelvey a pass-master on his day, Matty a ball of energy, Sean a good presser and Hendrick average (at best) at everything, but we lack power, dynamism and pace in midfield.

Dare I say it, we are crying out for another Moussa Sissoko type signing. Someone who will drive us forward and outmuscle opposition players – not just play sideways passes or struggle to keep up with the play.

With little to no money available and a big hole to fill, we’ll do well to find the man we’re crying out for in the limited loan market!
