Transfer blow for Bruce as ‘serious injury’ rules out move for January loan target – Reports

Some bad news for Steve Bruce as it looks like our hopes of signing Chelsea’s Fikayo Tomori have all but ended.

The England international had been regularly linked with a loan move to St James’ Park, however a ‘serious injury’ to fellow centre-back Andreas Christensen has saw Frank Lampard rule out a January exit for the 23-year-old.

This comes from The Sun’s Duncan Wright and the Northern Echo, with the latter claiming that Tomori was one of Steve Bruce’s ‘leading targets’ this month.

The Chronicle reported last month that the NUFC boss was a big fan and looked set to be offered the chance to sign him until the end of the season, however it seems those hopes have been scuppered.

Prior to Christensen’s game-changing injury, it was reported by BBC Sport a few days ago that Leeds were Tomori’s ‘likely destination’, so perhaps we were never likely to land him in the first place.

That said, this is another stroke of bad luck for Bruce when it comes to centre-backs, with us looking all set to sign Arsenal’s Rob Holding on loan last summer until Mikel Arteta’s late U-turn.

Our decision to send Florian Lejeune to Spain before signing a replacement is starting to look a little silly – especially when the Frenchman is enjoying an outstanding season in La Liga!
