Steve Bruce admitted in yesterday’s press conference that he faces an “awful decision” to decide who to pick between Karl Darlow and Martin Dubravka for tonight’s crucial clash with Sheffield United.
Since then, popular Twitter page @NUFC360 have a ran a poll asking Newcastle fans who they believe should start between the sticks at Bramall Lane.
After just over 13,000 votes, the final standings are quite telling and highlight what a brilliant job our stand-in stopper has done, with 75% preferring to keep Darlow in the side for now:
Dubravka didn’t put a foot wrong in our extra time defeat at Arsenal over the weekend, reminding us all what a safe pair of hands, superb shot stopper and calming influence he is.
That being said, Darlow has kept us in so many games this season and is arguably our player of 2020/21 as things stand alongside Callum Wilson – making any decision to drop him seem seem incredibly harsh.
We’ll be in safe hands if Dubravka does end up getting the nod tonight, but it would be a hammer blow for Darlow should Bruce bench him.
In time, I do believe Dubravka will be reinstated as the No 1 – I do think he is our best goalkeeper after all and imagine most Mags agree – however it wouldn’t be right to take Darlow out of the side at this point.
After all, would you drop a striker who’s scored five games running? I don’t think so!
