The Telegraph: NUFC’s unsung hero set to commit his future to the club & sign new deal

Ciaran Clark is all set to sign a new contract at Newcastle United – ending speculation of a potential move away from St James’ Park this summer.

This comes from The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath, who reports that the 31-year-old defender is ‘close’ to putting pen to paper.

The Irish international has been one of our unsung heroes over the past few seasons and was perhaps the only outfield player who didn’t let us down in the unacceptable display that saw us lose 1-0 to Sheffield United last night.

His current deal was due to expire at the end of the season, and The Telegraph report that Crystal Palace were seriously interested in signing him on a free transfer this summer had he refused our latest offer.

Steve Bruce confirmed earlier this month he was keen to see the centre-back sign a new deal and confirmed talks were underway, so it seems he’s now got his wish.

With Federico Fernandez, Andy Carroll, Jacob Murphy, Fabian Schar, Dwight Gayle and DeAndre Yedlin also out of contract in June, it’ll be interesting to see if any other new deals follow.

A well deserve reward for Clark’s consistent performances at the back, with he and Fernandez rarely letting us down under Bruce or Benitez.
