NUFC dealt new transfer blow – but Bruce still confident of signings before 11pm Monday

After missing out on Jesse Lingard, reports in Manchester claim Brandon Williams is another Steve Bruce target who won’t be heading to Tyneside this month.

This comes from the Manchester Evening News (MEN), who state that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has blocked any loan move away for the 20-year-old defender.

MEN claim both ourselves and Southampton had been trying to sign the versatile wing-back, however he looks set to reluctantly remain at Old Trafford after Timothy Fosu-Mensah’s move to Bayern Levekusen leaves them lacking defensive depth.

That said, Steve Bruce’s comments today suggest he is still hopeful of pulling off a deal or two before Mondays’ 11pm deadline:

We’re still hopeful, yes.

“We’ve had to be patient.

We’re trying desperately to bring a couple through the door if we can.”

“I’ve got one or two calls to make to certain managers in the next 24 hours

“We’re hopeful we can get one or two over the line.”

He still sounds relatively confident we’ll get a few through the door over the next few days.

Hamza Choudhury is clearly one we’re hoping to bring in, however Brenadan Rodgers confirmed earlier today that he’ll only leave if Leicester sign a midfielder to replace him.

As for wing-backs, Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles should be a no-brainer on loan now Willems is a no-go and Williams looks set to stay at Manchester United.

Let’s hope a busy three days is on the horizon. We need a boost from somewhere!
