Back in October 2019, Sky Sports confirmed we were in talks with Strasbourg over a potential deal for 6ft 4′ midfielder Ibrahima Sissoko.
Fast forward 18 months and French outlet L’Equipe claim we are back in for the 23-year-old.
With Steve Bruce in dire need of a box-to-box midfielder, they report that the Ligue 1 side are expecting Newcastle United to come forward with a concrete offer in the ‘coming days’ after reigniting their interest in the former France U-21 star.
Based on his profile – we sorely lack presence, drive and a real engine in the middle of the park – and the fact we’ve been regularly linked with Sissoko over the past 18 months, this latest rumour *might* just have legs.
That said, he’s been a regular in the Strasbourg side this season, meaning any move would surely have to be a permanent deal – something that doesn’t fit in with this idea that it’s loans only this month.
L’Equipe claim that Atlanta are also admirers of the powerful midfielder, who is contracted to the Ligue 1 side until 2024.
The Athletic confirmed we were tracking him this time last year, while The Sun’s Alan Nixon reported in that same month that Sissoko was a player we were looking to sign on a cut-price deal, six months on from Sky Sports’ story confirming our interest.
IF we free up funds via Matt Ritchie sale, this might just be one to watch…
