According to the great footballing sage, Paul Merson, Newcastle fans have “got to get realistic” because we are “still living in Alan Shearer, David Ginola, Les Ferdinand, that unbelievable Newcastle team.”
Personally, I think Paul Merson needs to “get realistic” and realise that people aren’t going to take him seriously if he insists on spewing absolute bile every time he opens his gob.

Let’s first tackle this ridiculous notion that we are still blinded by Kevin Keegan’s entertainers, because I think many Newcastle fans will attest to the fact that a good amount of time has passed since then. After all, we have witnessed many different players don the shirt and have even had 6 different players wear the Number 9 after Shearer’s stint. We are not living our life in history, and even if we were, it’s not as if we became a completely diminished force after Keegan’s years as Sir Bobby Robson’s tenure can attest.
Two of Merson’s ex-sides, Arsenal and Aston Villa, are in 10th and 9th place respectively and I can confidently state that Newcastle fans would have grabbed either one of those positions with both hands at the start of this season.
What Paul Merson, and all his equally dull pundit friends, need to realise is that we just want to see an attempt at progress and not a sad desperation to keep our heads just above the water.
In fact, Aston Villa are a perfect example of team that we could be emulating currently. They are a team who have recently recovered from the Championship, have established a plan and way of playing and are just showing some ambition to do their best.
Let’s not forget, Merson, that Aston Villa would probably still be underachieving in the Championship if they didn’t show some common sense when deciding to sack Steve Bruce!
