Newcastle preparing summer move for West Brom captain – The Telegraph

According to reports, Newcastle are eyeing a summer move for West Brom skipper Kyle Bartley.

The Baggies centre-back is entering the final year of his contract at The Hawthorns and The Telegraph report that ourselves and Burnley are keeping a close eye on his situation.

With Jamaal Lascelles the youngest senior centre-back on our books at 27, I’d have expected us to target someone with age on their side – not a 29-year-old Bartley who turns 30 in May.

That said, a cut-price move for an average player who’d cost very little would perfectly highlight the sort of ambition (or lack of it) that exists under Mike Ashley, with this stinking of a move that prepares us for life in the Championship.

After all, most of Bartley’s appearances have come in the second tier, with him a regular in West Brom’s promotion season after stints with Leeds and Swansea.

The 6ft 4′ defender may add some height and leadership to our ranks, however it’s an underwhelming transfer link at best – especially when he is no better than the likes of Lascelles, Fernandez, Clark, Schar and Lejeune.
