Newcastle set to hand new contracts to FOUR first-team players – Report

It looks like Dwight Gayle and Fabian Schar aren’t the only Newcastle United players set to sign new contracts at the club.

With the striker all set to sign a new three-year deal and the club activating a clause that sees Schar’s deal extend by another year, The Chronicle also report that Jacob Murphy and Federico Fernandez are in talks to renew their current contracts.

This would see FOUR players who were at risk of leaving for nothing this summer all commit to at least another season at St James’ Park – although some will question whether this only protects their value should we look to cash in.

The same report also states that Gayle’s extension will be signed, sealed and delivered in the ‘coming days’, with the clause in Schar’s contract already being exercised and the feeling behind the scenes being that Murphy and Fernandez are now ‘likely’ to secure new deals after talks.

Although he’s been a bit part player, Murphy’s impressive cameos and superb display against Spurs on Sunday suggests to me he’s worthy of a new deal, while Fernandez is a player who’s rarely let us down ever since Rafa Benitez brought him in from Swansea.

It remains to be seen where Schar’s long term future lies and there’s some scepticism around a 31-year-old Gayle getting THREE more years, however the latter could soon be a key player should we suffer the unthinkable this season…

Elsewhere, it’s unclear whether Andy Carroll will earn a new deal, while Christian Atsu and Henri Saivet will see their contract run down before leaving as free agents at the end of the season.
