Newcastle hijack Celtic’s bid for 19-year-old & now lead race to complete £850,000 deal – Report

According to The Mail Online, Newcastle lead Celtic in the race to sign Wigan Athletic forward Kyle Joseph – having hijacked their bid with a significantly bigger compensation package.

The Magpies are working on a deal for the highly rated 19-year-old who is out of contract in the summer, and are said to be in the driving seat to secure his signature.

Newcastle are said to be willing to pay £850,000 for the Scotland U19 international, which is significantly better than the compensation of around £230,000 from Celtic for a cross-border transfer of a player out of contract and under 24 years old.

The Mail state that we are the front runners and are keen to push him onto the first team with our lack of goalscorer’s there for everyone to see.

Joseph has five goals in 16 appearances for the League One side this term. A back injury has hampered his campaign and he hasn’t played for Wigan since January, but his performances this season have attracted many clubs such as Rangers, Celtic and Arsenal – who looked to bring him into their U23 set up.

Here’s him in action:
