Newcastle United’s summer plans aren’t going to be anything spectacular by the sounds of the finances coming out of the club and will be looking to do deals on the cheap – maybe from teams leagues below.
Football Insider claim we have been scouting defender Dion Sanderson – a 21-year-old centre-back on loan at Sunderland from Wolves – and are planning a summer move to bring him to St James’ Park.
With a tight net budget, many teams are going to need to operate wisely and they claim Newcastle have been impressed by his displays in League One this season.
The report states that Newcastle aren’t the only club eyeing a summer move for Sanderson, with Sheffield United, Crystal Palace and Huddersfield all linked with a bid for the £2m-rated defender.
Sanderson has been described as a “Rolls Royce” defender by Sunderland manager Lee Johnson, which may affect Sunderland’s plans to keep him if they manage to secure promotion to the Championship.
However, Sanderson has stated his intention to stake a claim in the Wolves first team next season – but may be open to a move if Wolves decide his future is not at the club.
Federico Fernandez‘s deal is set to run out this summer and Fabian Schar has reportedly had a one year extension triggered in his contract, so it will be interesting to see if the club are looking for younger replacements for the pair.
