Speaking to Sky Sports just moments after today’s topsy turvy win over West Ham, an exhausted Steve Bruce has said the Newcastle United job should come with a “government health warning!”.
The NUFC boss also commented on Saint-Maximin’s injury after his withdrawal mid-way through the second half, confirming he has a ‘swollen ankle’ that he’s hopeful is nothing serious.
After a Diop own goal, Dawson red and Joelinton tap in send us into half-time 2-0 up against West Ham’s 10 men, we allowed the Hammers to draw level – until Joe Willock’s late header handed us all three points.
Here’s what Bruce had to say after the game, offer an update on ASM and reacting to a big win that sends us up to 15th and NINE points clear of third bottom Fulham:
“Saint-Maximin, unfortunately, has got a bad swollen ankle, which he did after ten minutes.
“It was touch and go at half-time whether he came out.
“We hope he’s going to be okay.
“We’ve seen what he’s like when he’s on the pitch and he’s right.
“We’ll see later on in the week.”
A huge win that sends us within touching distance of safety – even if we VERY nearly shot ourselves in the foot in that nail-biting second half!

Second half, everything I dislike about Newcastle under Bruce.
Against 10 men they were disgusting, sitting back, no pressing, changes should have been made much sooner, we can’t afford to play like that as we can’t defend and with Joelinton we can’t attack.
Bruce and coaching staff have to get a grip of this lackadaisical approach as soon as they see it and make substitutions. We should have been all over them, making them do the chasing and stamping our authority on the game
Fortunate win but will take it.

Watched live then MOTD,bruce saying we sat too deep second half, he’s the one telling them to do that, he’s the tactical mastermind instructing them from his dugout, can he not shout instructions? once on the pitch it’s up to them, they should of started that second half on the front foot getting stuck in, this could still go to goal difference & ours is woefully bad
