Klopp names NUFC’s “proper footballer” & assesses new system ahead of Liverpool clash

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has praised Allan Saint-Maximin ahead of today’s game at Anfield – describing the explosive Frenchman as a “proper footballer”.

The German boss believes he’s linked up “really well” with Joelinton of late and has also commented on the boost Callum Wilson could give us on his return from injury.

Here’s what he had to say ahead of the game, also commenting on our season so far and the new system that’s seen Bruce return to a back five:

“They had a good spell at the beginning of the season but then things dropped – they had injuries, COVID – a lot of things came together but now they have a settled line-up even when they have been missing key players like Lascelles and Schar.

“But now they have five at the back and Steve likes to keep the structure when it’s successful – so five at the back works well then Shelvey, Longstaff, Almiron probably and there could be some others as well in the midfield.

“Mr Saint-Maximin is a proper footballer, he was injured and that was a blow but along with Joelinton they play really well together, and Wilson isn’t even on the pitch so if he starts that is not a big drop [in talent] I would say.

“They have found their line-up, their form, the way they want to play – for them it is good, for us it is a job to do.”

Saint-Maximin has had a hand in three goals in our last two games and could be our biggest hope of coming away from Merseyside with a surprise result.

It’s also interesting to see Klopp name-check Joelinton again – a player he will know well after bursting onto the scene with Hoffenheim before we signed him.
