Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle: Willock scores 95th minute equaliser seconds after VAR shambles

Wow. A 95th minute equaliser from super sub Joe Willock hands Newcastle United a huge point at Anfield – just moments after VAR denied Callum Wilson in extra time!

We thought we’d grabbed a point with a couple of minutes to play when Wilson bundled home, however the video assistant chalked it off for a ‘handball’.

A bitter blow and tough one to swallow, highlighting the pathetic nature of these new rules, but it mattered not moments later when Willock latched onto a loose ball and smashed home with just seconds on the clock.

Mo Salah scored just three minutes into the game and Liverpool had a host of huge chances, however we never gave up, had opportunities of our own in both halves and ended up fully deserving our point in the end.

The result takes us NINE clear of third bottom Fulham and up to 36 points ahead of next Sunday’s clash with Arsenal, with this a bonus point for Bruce in our game in hand on Scott Parker’s side.

Bruce went with an unchanged line up. Some might say rightly so to reward the team that beat West Ham 3-2 last weekend, however it felt like we missed a trick leaving both Callum Wilson and Joe Willock on the bench – two players capable of hurting a Liverpool team that had lost SIX of their last seven Premier League home games.

As for the hosts, Klopp went with his awesome foursome for only the third time this season, handing starts to Salah, Mane, Firminio AND Jota.

The game kicked off and it only took three minutes for one of the above to find the net.

After Mane was given too much time to hang in a cross, his high ball into the box wasn’t dealt with and Mo Salah beat Ritchie to the bounce, took a brilliant touch inside and lashed the ball past Dubravka. 1-0 Liverpool and a disastrous start, giving ourselves a mountain to climb.

We were sitting too deep in the early stages, offering so little on the break when we turned over the ball. It was immediately clear we were relying on Saint-Maximin to do everything on the counter, with him often having so few options ahead of him when he got the chance to drive forward.

He showed his destructive dribbling by bursting through the Liverpool midfield and drawing Kabak into a cynical foul that got him in the book, but that was our only real moment of note until our biggest chance of the first half arrived.

Sean Longstaff made a bursting run in behind and was picked out perfectly by Shelvey. He was well on side and only had Alisson to beat, but never looked confident, took too long to get the ball under control and saw his tame shot blocked by the big Brazilian in the end.

Two half chances then fell to Jota – one being blazed over and the other deflected into the arms of Dubrakva.

We were growing into the game after a slow start and beginning to impose ourselves on the game a little more in the final third. Saint-Maximin looked at it, Murphy was dangerous whenever he got down the line and Almiron’s energy on the break was threatening to cause problems.

Minutes later and we looked set to get in behind again after some good work from Saint-Maximin, only for Almiron and Joelinton to get in each others way to spoil what looked like a very promising break at one stage.

On the subject of ****-ups, Clark then did his best to gift Liverpool a second when a scuffed pass across was easily intercepted. The ball then fell to Jota, but the former Wolves star bobbled a shot wide.

30 minutes in and it was hard to believe there’d been only one goal. We’d spurned chances of our own and grown into the game, however we looked an accident waiting to happen at the back, with Clark sloppy and Fernandez walking a tightrope after an early yellow card.

Another explosive run from ASM arrived and we were a pass away from getting Sean Longstaff in behind again. Frustratingly, Joelinton got the ball caught under his feet and the chance was gone. Big Jo had been much improved in our last two home games, but he was letting us down in this one.

Two more huge chances then arrived for the home side. First Salah was clean through and saw a shot blocked by Dubravka after taking a poor touch, then the Egyptian – who was being given FAR too much space – put it on a plate for Mane. He looked all set to make it 2-0 but he too was smothered by the Dubravka after failing to get his shot away.

Thiago was being given too much space to pull the strings, we never got close enough to Salah and the entire front four were creating chances at will. We had opportunities of our own and were regularly hurting them when Saint-Maximin got on the ball, but were fortunate to go in at the break just 1-0 down in the end.

A game so wide open was crying out for one man – Callum Wilson. His pace, presence and quality in the final third could get us back into this.

Sadly, it took 15 minutes of the second half to see him introduced, with this coming after Joelinton hit a big chance straight at Alisson after doing so well to burst past Kabak and Fabinho.

Wilson’s introduction was followed by Willock soon after. The Arsenal loanee replaced Ciaran Clark – an ‘interesting’ move considering it saw Jonjo Shelvey slot in at centre-back!

With Wilson, ASM, Willock and Almiron now all on the pitch there was no reason why we couldn’t get back into the game. That said, Klopp’s move to bring on Milner at Jota’s expense helped shore up a previously open Liverpool midfield, making it tougher for us to get Saint-Maximin running at their defence.

15 minutes on the clock and we did our best (once again) to gift Liverpool a second, this time via a careless Sean Longstaff pass that ended in Salah smashing into the side netting.

Almiron pulled up with cramp and Gayle came on. Time was running out, but we were pushing for an equaliser and thought we’d got it in extra time.

Wilson broke clear, bundled the ball past Alisson and tapped in on the line. A huge goal that all but sealed our survival, until VAR ruled it out for an accidental handball…for this.

A complete joke that showed up the flaws in VAR, but justice was done seconds later.

Willock arrived in the box as he does so well, latched onto a Gayle knockdown and his deflected shot flew past Alisson to hand us a late point!

Absolute scenes at Anfield and huge celebrations between the players and Steve Bruce!

Next up, Arsenal at St James’ Park a week tomorrow.

  1. Watching it again there ‘s a push on Wilson by Trent just before the ball hits Callums arm, it puts him off balance towards the ball, could of been a pen to us.
How quick did VAR rule it handball too !

Willock won’t be allowed to play v Arsenal will he ?

      (Quote)

  2. Olly – I thought you knew something about football?

The handball rule clearly says : ” It is an offence if a player: ….. scores in the opponents’ goal directly from their hand/arm, EVEN IF ACCIDENTAL,….. ”

Nothing to do with VAR – it’s the rule, it was a handball.

Whether or not the rule is right is a totally different issue.

  3. Olly: “ausome foursome”? They are in Liverpool, shouldnt it be Fab Four?

I didnt mind Bruce’s press conference even though he still brought out the excuses unnecessarily. He went for it. bringing on 2 strikers and an attacking midfielder. That’s what we wanted. The game probably went the way he wanted as well. It was Pardew-ball, keep it tight to half time, ride your luck and rely on your goalie.

This was the way Liverpool have played all season. They have created and missed loads of chances. This is what I expected, although I thought they would score a couple and we would lose.

Shelvey played OK, even as a sweeper. Not sure if that should be his permanent role though as he cant defend, but it did allow him to look for a few passes.

  4. You know if we beat Arsenal, Sheffield and Fulham we will have more points than last year? How smug will Bruce be then? They are all beatable. Arsenal are shyte and I think there will be even more pressure this week because the fans hate Kroenke. I am surprised Arteta has got off so easily. Who chose Arteta as Manager AFTV? Yes the Krankies.

  5. Fulham will be down by the time we play them. Some will say they will be dangerous because they have nothing to play for. But remember last time they were relegated we beat them 4-0 at Craven Cottage in Rafa’s last game. Perez got a hattrick to flatter his stats and mean we got 30 mil from Leicester for him.

  6. Liverpool have had 146 attempts on goal at home in 2021 and scored 4. That is a conversion rate of 2.7%.

      (Quote)

  7. It’s the most ridiculous rule they could ever come up with – there was no intent to cheat or gain an unsporting advantage at all in that goal – if anything, like KIm points out TTA pushes Wilson in the back.

They are changing it next season … BUT … they new rule will be that if it hit Wilson’s arm/hand and HE puts the ball in the net it won’t count … BUT, if it hits his arm/hand and a teammate puts the ball in the back of the net it WILL count ???‍♂️ Who the hell comes up with these rules FFS???????

      (Quote)

  8. Funny Steve McManaman giving a Liverpool player MOTM like.

Martin Dubravka was an immovable force today!!. I know ASM gets all the mentions & rightly so coz he was a one man army for us – especially in the first half. But without Dubs we could have been at least 3 down in the first half – he was brilliant!!!.

As soon as Wilson & Willock came on we looked so much more of a threat up front – we pressed higher & the game totally turned in our favour. The look on Klopps face was priceless.

City & Utd are way out in front, but after this Super League BS – I hope Leicester & WHU get those other 2 CL spots … and I NEVER thought I’d say that about WHU ?

      (Quote)

  9. I fear that Arsenal might not want to sell Willock the way they are playing this season.

With the success they are having with their younger players, they may choice to bring him back and develop him back into the first team with the likes of Saka, Smith Rowe, Martinelli & Nketia – and have a good clear out of the high earning flops that have let them down most of the season.

I really hope I’m wrong & they let him go – even if it’s another loan with option to buy – or a buy back clause. That lad is head and shoulders better than Longstaff.

  10. Brighton are a really strange team. They have 33 goals and 6 of those were against us. That means they have scored 27 in 30 against the rest. That is relegation form, less than a goal a game.

I dont think they will be relegated but at 30 mins they ar 1 down to Sheffield.

      (Quote)

  11. For all their pretty patterns, we have more goals than Brighton. We have 36 despite playing 2 false 10s, split strikers and Joelinton in a lot of games. I mean, not playing Gayle when Wilson was out is criminal.

But, we are safe so I will save my criticism of Bruce until another day.

Best chance of beating Arsenal in years. When was the last time? They really havent had a good side for about 5 years either. Maybe even 8 years?

      (Quote)

  12. Do you know the Red Bindippers fan groups demanded their flags be taken down from the Kop. Then when John Henry came out with that pathetic apology they said put them back up. How’s that for a statement. They have about as much backbone as a jellyfish.

This is not the forst time either for FSG. They backed down when they put the tickets for the new stand up to 77 quid. There have been others as well.

  13. It is the first ever PL Hall of Fame induction on Monday. My guess is Shearer and Gerrard but it could also be Henry.

They asked a couple of pundits here last week and one said Shearer and Giggs. That would be a bit awkward 🙂

  15. I still want us to finish the season well and I dont care how much praise that gets the cabbage from Simon Jordon and the TalkSport knackers. I always want NUFC to win, even when we have to watch Bruce get all smug. Only BFS can beat Bruce in looking smug when we get a good result.

We know Fulham are down now so we may as well enjoy it. The only game I am really worried about is Man City but even then Pep may rest some players because of their fixture congestion. They are not all super stars in his squad. Sterling is having an offseason. Stones, Mendy and others have a lot of off days. Same with Mahrez.

Then there’s Leicester. We are due a good game against them. Worse teams than us have played well against them but they do seem to be our bogey team.

  16. I am not sure what the appeal of a Hall of Fame is? It might be interesting to see memorabilia. Old shirts, some clips of goals or legendary games?

The only one I would even consider going to is The Rock and Roll HOF. The concerts are pretty good although most are geriatrics by the time they are inducted. But they could play the bands’ music in the exhibit rooms. It might be good to see Elvis’s Las Vegas outfit, or Jimi Hendrix’s guitar or Freddy Mercury’s leotard. Go to the cafeteria and have penut butter, bacon and banana sandwich in honour of Elvis. Or shoot up some smack in honour of Lou Reed and Keith Richards?

Yes, if I am ever in Cleveland I might go. Mind, I cant think of a reason I would ever be in Cleveland. The Sports ones I would give a miss.

  17. OK. I dont think this will be taken well as it is not very PC, but I do not get this social media boycott for anti-racism next weekend. Mainly the timing. There are already many intiatives for this including taking the knee before every match. I am not against the thought, I am against the timing.

We have just seen the biggest power and money grab in football history. Most people cannot hold 2 thoughts in their heads at the same time so doing a social media ban for another cause will dilute the outrage against to Dirty Dozen and make it go away all the quicker.

Any reforms and punishments will be lost in the new social media boycott. The narrative will be this and anything the 14 have to say will be lost. A PL slap on the wrist for the Dirty Half Dozen will be the sub-headline and will be lost.

Let’s concentrate on the recent ESL **** that has happened and wait a week or 2 for the social media outrage and boycott. It will still be there waiting, as it has for the 29 years of the PL and before.

  18. And this blog is a social media site. Is Olly puuling this blog down during the boycott?

  19. A lot of the ESL supporters miss the point about competition. Those 6 cannot play in the PL too. Imagine ManU playing teams who want to finish in the top 4 or avoid relegation. They’d have nothing to play for as they’re safe in the knowledge of Europe next season. 6 of them doing that would destroy the PL badly.

Great point yesterday with Dubravka MOM. Willocks late runs are really paying dividends too.
Even Wilson is way better than I thought. HTL!

  20. Georgio: Wilson is quick. If we use him right he could terrorize the high press teams.

Now what the hell is Merson on about. He has been in the game 40 years and comes out and says he has learnt a lot about NUFC in the past 3 weeks and should part ways with Bruce. His logic seems to be that the fans have been right about Bruce all along and we will be back where we are next year if he stays. Next breath Merse says but Bruce is a good man and a good Manager.

How can you have a pundit saying such contradictory stuff. And this after he defended the indrfensible when we went on that run of 2 wins in 20.

      (Quote)

  21. I always thought that Merse and Rio said controversial stuff just to stay in the news as their “banter” is just ****. In the back of my mind though I thought it might just be stupidity. It is probably both.

  22. What I am saying about this social media boycott is that it will take the news cycle away from the breakaway. I have just been through 4 years of Donald Trump where there were so many scandals that would have caused a normal President to resign. Trump just ignored them and even stirred the pot to create a new scandal to swithch attention.

The social media boycott will create a new news cycle and the breakaway will blend in. The PL will probably use it as cover to announce some minor slap on the wrist and no real changes waiting for this Govt investigatation and committee which will take years.

I dont know what the rules are anymore and the Refs certainly dont – onfield andat VAR.

Sharpy: I am not saying it is a bad idea I just want us to concentrate on the ESL a while longer and part of that is access to social media. It seems attention spans with new media get less and less every year. I dont want to give Masters and Co any cover to do nothing. Which I think they will do anyway except removing Big 6 execs from committees. That is not really a punishment it is an admission of their double dealing. But Marsters and Hoffman were also double dealing and they will keep their jobs – that is total hypocrisy.

Eric – I think to be fair the social media ban was in the pipe line before the ESL almost came out of nowhere – a few players & clubs came off SM before the ESL nonsense.
I know this may be controversial a bit too, but I don’t care about the ESL if I was being totally honest. Fans of these clubs twisting the owners don’t understand them & don’t get what the clubs history means … dry your eyes man!!, NUFC fans have been slaughtered for years because we have an owner just like that.
The fans weren’t twisting when Chelsea & City owners bought trophies. When Utd spent £80m on Maguire or Lpool £75m on VVD. Spurs and Arsenal weren’t twisting when their owners bought them a new stadium.

But it will kill football … football has been dead for 20 years for most of us ‘also ran clubs’. I know people bang on that Leicester won it – but really?, we are going to base an argument of fair competition on one freak season?!.

Are people honestly arguing that all clubs start a season with the title as their target?. Utter nonsense and we all know it.

2 or 3 clubs target the title. 5 or 6 target a top 4 spot and maybe a cup. 4 or 5 target top 10 and the rest hope for 40 points to dodge relegation.

What is there from the last 10-15yrs at NUFC that is really worth fighting for?. Let them get on with it as far as I’m concerned, because it won’t turn out how they hope. These clubs will consume themselves in 10yrs. Their plan works short term, but fans will get bored & businessmen will move on to other things.

  30. Sharpy I understand your sentiment. There is a great adverisement going on today for the ESL. Man City 21 shots, Spurs 2. I reckon the new fans in Bejing could watch their 15 minutes of that as Florntino Perez says their attention span is 🙂 Spurs and elite club 🙂 Yer avin larf. Elite stadium, beer that fills from the bottom and cancelled cheese room. They dont even have a sponsor for it because Levy is asking too much.

You are right of course that the PL is already anti-competitve but concentrating the money even more is not the answer and that is what the ESL would do.

I also want to punish Masters and Hoffman. They seem like they are acting like aggrieved parties when they withheld tha dosier they received on Project Big Picture from the other 14 just 6 months ago.

Anyway, I am sure you are right about the boycott being in the works for a while, I just wanted it delayed a week to let this ESL play out a bit more. It will be like it never happened in 6 months time and the punishments will be next to nothing because as I said the jury (Masters and Hoffman) were complicit in a similar crime with the same people not 6 months ago.

  31. I might watch the lasses play instead even though it is the same elite clubs that have the top teams. When I have watched the US National Team the quality has been pretty good. The main differences with the mens game are:

There is not as much fouling.

There is not as much sqeeling when they get tackled. They dont go down screaming like little girls as do their counterparts in the PL men’s teams. Having silent stadiums has let you hear what p2ssies these players really are when they get fouled.

    There isnt much play acting.

Every one of these stories gets us no further forward.

I have even forgotten what the criteria of the owners and directors test are now. My only feeling about this was a gut feeling that the backlash against the ESL would make it harder to approve another mega-rich owner into the PL.

We are certainly stuck with Bruce if it is not approved though so I am keeping my fingers crossed, just not believing any of this noise without evidence reporting.

It is simply not true and we have 11 points from the last 9 games which is bottom 6 form. There have been a few periods in games where we have done OK but mostly it has been other teams’ missed chances and bits of individual brilliance from St Max, Willock and Dubs that have bailed us out. Plus mistakes by West Ham.

Eric – both Arsenal & Spurs are a total mess – going backwards quickly, hence why they were so desperately trying to get into this ESL. They have overspent so much that top 4 is a far stretch for both of them now & they can’t & won’t attract the players needed to compete for top 4.

Spurs should never have got rid of Poch, but having done so spent big time bring in Jose – top manager but not the football that was going to please them. Now they owe him a small fortune & have had to put in a 29 year old. They’ve lost the cup final & won’t make top 4 – and as a result I expect Kane to leave, and he won’t be the only one.

Arteta is breaking all kinds of wrong records at Arsenal & if they go out of the Europa cup, they will be in a right mess too.

We were totally flattered by 2 mistakes against West Ham and at best held our own in the 1st 35 minutes. We were also close to defeat at Spurs.

I am very happy we got the points we did and happy for the comebacks, but we cannot pretend we have totally turned this around.

11 points from 9 games is not the record that should be setting off the fawning that I am seeing from some on Wraith’s channel and also the talking heads in the media. Watch our game FFS and dont be fooled by a late equalizer or some magic from ASM.

I still expect us to beat Arsenal though 🙂

No matter that Fulham were ****, and had to buck their trend of the season, these so-called fans had us certs for relegation.

Even after Brighton, I had us 50/50 the day after and that was my lowest ebb. And well it should have been, since we were playing ****. But I looked at the team and we still had better players than Fulham.

I have supported NUFC for 50 years and you can never rule anything out, but a lot of these podcasters are a bit TOO predisposed to the worst case scenario. I have mostly thought that even a cabbage can keep these players up with some really **** teams in the division.

  47. Sharpy17: Ice – I know mate, and the loanees have arguably been their best players this season.
Parker will have to start from scratch again next season coz everything he has built this season will be dismantled.

I think he’s done a great job their this season to motivate that many loaned players. If he had a forward like Wilson or Ings I think they stay up.

    i agree mate

  48. I’ll be 1st to do a team prediction for Sunday because I think it is an easy one. Donkey will be dropped. I think Clark will keep his place though but maybe switch Dummett to the middle?

    Dubravka

    Murphy Fernandez Dummett Clark Ritchie

    Longstaff Shelvey

    Miggy Wilson St Max

    NUFC 2, Arsenal 1

  49. Sharpy: I am not questioning Parker’s managerial or motivational skills, just making an observation. I didnt think he was very good for us. Did a lot of running in little circles at the half way line. I suppose he was neat and tidy, but he didnt really do a lot.

  50. I would take Parker just because of his sartorial skills. He is going for best dressed Manager. Doesnt have a lot of competition with Bruce with his trackie bottoms and too tight tops.

It is funny that Brucie never gets on the training pitch during the week but dresses for it on the weekend for the match.

  51. I am waiting for Bruce to have his Mumu moment. There was an episode of The Simpsons where Homer dicovered Mumus and was liberated and wore them all the time, even to work. I think Bruce needs to have his Mumu moment.

Well, it’s official, I hate packing.

Kim – are you finally getting to move house mate?, sorry if you’ve already posted to say so, I haven’t had chance to read many posts, just come on to rant/post myself lately ??

  54. It’s open season for transfer speculation now like isn’t it?!.

My expectation is that we start next season with Bruce still in charge and few changes to our squad – freebies & loans … if Ashley is still in place I think that’s quite realistic – if it’s better than that scenario then happy days.

  58. Juve and Meelan might not get to the Champions League. Add that to Spurs and **** and maybe, possibly, probably Liverpool. You can see why they wanted the guaranteed Super League.

  59. I havent really looked at their finances closely but I think Spurs might be in a bit of trouble. It probably didnt turn out to be the best time to borrow $1Billion to build that stadium. It was obvious they needed CL football to pay for it but it was a time when competition for those places was getting harder. Most years you would think that Man City, Man U, Chelsea and Liverpool would get the places, so what was Levy thinking? I think he miscalculated and thought/thinks Spurs are bigger than they are.

I think they owe the Bank of England like $150 million and Levy wants like $50 mil a year for naming rights and there are no takers so far.

Its going to be a pantomime if Kane leaves. The fans will want the money reinvested but with no CL football it will go to service the debt.

I dont know why I even care, probably just laughing after the BS of the ESL that they find themselves in money trouble.

  60. Sharpy, Thanks, yeah it’s been an 11 year search, and there is so much remedial work needed on it as well as a drain to fix and asbestos to remove and an old sunroom to demolish.
On the bright side it’s level living and i have a huge back garden.

Eric – I still don’t agree with the ESL, but the media have done a very good job of muddying the waters from the original proposal.
The 6 clubs never suggested breaking away from the PL – it was the PL that said they could play in both. The media have managed to convince us all that the 6 clubs were ready to break away – that’s not true. It was the CL set up they had a problem with, not the PL.

The reason it was those 6 teams is because they have played in the CL most consistently in the last 5-10 years or so.

Like I say, I’m not defending it or backing it – I still don’t give a **** really, but facts are important & the media has managed to bend those facts to vilify these clubs & accuse them of trampling on the history – they wanted to remain in the PL & were told they couldn’t.

  62. I also read an article earlier that say the PL will save £83m in parachute payments with Norwich & Watford bouncing straight back up – and maybe more if B’mth win the play off.
Why not save that money between the lower league clubs?. They were ready to hand it to just 2 teams – why not share it amongst multiple teams who will have been hit really hard during this pandemic?.

  63. Sharpy: 6 into 4 doesnt go. That is what this ESL was about for Spurs and currently Arsenal. I have no doubt that Levy was manipulating this along with Masters and Hoffman.
