Get German Football News reporter Daniel Pinder believes Jetro Willems will seal a return to St James’ Park this summer, with the full-back all set to leave Frankfurt on a free transfer.
The Dutchman was heavily linked with a move back to St James’ Park in January, however he ended up staying put – despite rejecting a contract offer from the Bundesliga club.
Although we opted against a move earlier this year, Pinder wonders if our stance may chance now he’ll be available for nothing in a few months time – insisting that the player himself remains eager to re-sign.
Here’s what he’s had to say, tipping the 27-year-old to finally get his wish this summer:
“I think Newcastle is where he wants to be.
“I’ve seen him like tweets from Newcastle fans on social media about a return.
“He hasn’t really played for Eintracht Frankfurt this season as he’s down the pecking order behind the likes of Kostic and Erik Durm.
“Obviously, his contract is up in the summer as well so yeah, I think Newcastle will be the club for him.”
Willems is yet to play a single minute of football this season, however it is worth noting that he’s been involved in 11 of Frankfurt’s last 14 matchday squads – suggesting he’s fit again and ready to be called upon if needed.
That said, it seems he’s well down in the pecking order at present and simply waiting until he can find a new club this summer.
With us lacking depth at left-back and playing a formation that could suit the explosive Dutchman, his arrival on a free transfer should be a no-brainer.
