New name linked as NUFC ‘join the race’ to sign highly-rated Dutchman

Newcastle have joined the race to sign highly-rated defender Danilho Doekhi, according to Football Insider.

The former Ajax talent has been one of the standout centre-backs in the Eredivisie this season, with his displays helping Vitesse Arnhem boast the best defensive record in the Dutch league this season.

Football Insider claim Rangers have been showing interest, but have been informed both ourselves and Fulham have now joined the race for the 22-year-old.

Doekhi stands 6ft 3′ tall and has been capped for his country at U18, U19, U20 and U21 level, being in the Netherlands squad for the recent European Championships.

It remains to be seen if there’s any truth in this latest transfer link, however it does feel like we’re crying out for an injection of youth and fresh legs at centre-back, with Jamaal Lascelles (27) our youngest senior player in that department.

Here’s some clips of Doekhi in action during his days in the Ajax Academy:

  1. Seems to love a sliding ’round the corner’ tackle. Do you think he’d get away with those in the namby pamby Premier League with it’s picky VAR?
