The Telegraph: NUFC eyeing move for the ‘next Van Dijk’ with cut-price deal on the cards

After numerous links with a move to Newcastle United, The Telegraph have confirmed that we are showing interest in Vitesse centre-back Danilho Doekhi.

The likes of Football Insider and Dutch outlet De Telegraaf have tipped us to make a move for the 22-year-old over the past week.

Now, The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath reports that we are on of THREE clubs eyeing a cut-price deal for the 6ft 3′ defender, with ourselves, Norwich and Rangers all interested.

He also states that he could be a ‘relatively cheap option’ heading into the summer transfer window, having just one year remaining on his current contract.

Doekhi is a Dutch U21 international and former Ajax Academy product who has been one of the top performing centre-backs in the Eredivisie this season, helping Vitesse boast the best defence in Holland as they look on track to qualify for Europe in 4th.

His tall frame, impressive pace for his height and ability to play out from the back has seen him draw comparisons to Virgin Van Dijk – a player who emerged from the Dutch league with Groningen at a similar age.

Considering the lack of funds likely to be available this summer and the need for some fresh faces at centre-back, he might just fit the bill.
