Newcastle linked with £8.5m move for ex-Chelsea wonderkid after superb season in Ligue 1

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle are interested in signing former Chelsea winger Gael Kalkuta.

The Lille-born attacker has impressed in Ligue 1 this season, with his 11 goals and 5 assists propelling Lens up to 6th and in contention to quality for Europe.

Kalkuta left Chelsea in 2015, playing just 16 times for the Blues – despite becoming the club’s youngest player to ever represent the club in the Champions League way back in 2009.

12 years later, The Mail claim we are one of four clubs looking to bring him back to the Premier League, with ourselves, Crystal Palace, Watford and Fulham all named as sides who’ve watched him closely this season.

Lens have just activated their option to sign him on a permanent deal from Amiens, seeing him join for just over £4m, however it’s reported they’d reluctantly cash in on the 29-year-old if they receive an offer around £8.5m.

Having previously operated as a left winger earlier in his career, Kakuta has often played as a number 10 or second striker for Lens – although it seems he hasn’t lost his ability to beat a man based on the clip below!

  1. I met Gael and his parents when he was at Chelsea. Nice kid with bags of talent, a decent squad member if we have injury problems to StMax and miggy.
