According to reports, Jetro Willems is close to sealing a long-awaited return to Newcastle United.
This comes from German outlet BILD, who report that the Dutchman is ‘on the verge’ of re-signing at St James’ Park.
After rejecting an extension at Frankfurt earlier this year, they report that he’ll leave the Bundesliga side this summer and arrive at Newcastle on a free transfer.
The 27-year-old hasn’t featured all season, but has recovered from the serious knee injury suffered during his successful loan spell on Tyneside, with him being part of Frankfurt’s matchday squads over the second half of 2020/21.
Time will tell if these promising reports from Germany are true, however this does feel like a deal that makes sense for all parties. He’s still adored here, is good friends with Saint-Maximin, could be a bargain on a free and well suited to the current system.
Let’s hope we see him back doing what he does best in a black and white shirt next season!

I know he had a bad injury when on loan with us, but the lad was Rolls Royce at LWB & I think Lewis could learn a lot from him in his development.
I’m a big fan of Ritchie in that position too, but at 31 I think this signing makes sense.
