NUFC hijack deal for free agent defender as player is offered chance to sign this summer – Report

According to reports, Nigerian centre-back Udoka Chima could be the latest name signed up to our Academy this summer.

This comes from All Nigeria Soccer, who claim the 19-year-old has been invited to train with our U23’s – an arrangement that could end in him signing a contract with the club should he impress.

They report states that Portuguese giants Braga and Benfica are also keen on the Italian-born defender, with the latter said to have had him on a 10-day trial recently.

Chima is currently without a club, having been released by Burnley at the end of the 2019/20 season.

This comes after the club handed recent trials to former Boro talent Andrew Nelson and Cameron Ferguson – the son of former Mag Duncan.

Any move for Chima would see the club follow a recent trend at Academy level, with the likes of Ludwig Francillette, Niall Brookwell (Liverpool), Florent Indalecio, Bradley Cross (Schalke), Stan Flaherty (Arsenal) and Matty Bondswell (RB Leipzig) all signing over the past 18 months as ‘free agent’ player who’d just been released.
