Newcastle make ‘preliminary advances’ over the signing of Euro 2020 striker – The Athletic

The Athletic have revealed that Newcastle United have been sounding out a potential move for Wolfsburg goal-machine Wout Weghorst.

The giant striker is will represent the Netherlands at Euro 2020, heading into the tournament on the back of an impressive season in Germany – seeing him bag an impressive 25 goals in all competitions.

In their latest piece looking at a few ones to watch at this summer’s finals, The Athletic claim that Newcastle have recently made ‘preliminary advances’ regarding the 28-year-old’s availability.

Interestingly, German outlet BILD reported this time last year that the 6ft 6′ powerhouse was one of our top transfer targets, with him believed to have a £32m asking proice at the time.

12 months later, The Athletic claim Wolfsburg will cash in on the big man if an offer in the region of £25m arrives.

He looks a monster and someone who could form a frightening partnership with Callum Wilson, however I really don’t see us spending that sort of money on another striker – especially when funds are believed to be right and a permanent move for Joe Willock could take up most, if not all, of Bruce’s budget.

The report also states that Tottenham and West Ham have shown some interest, so it’ll be interesting to see how he performs at the Euros.

He may be out of our reach already, however you can almost guarantee he’ll sign elsewhere if he ends up impressing over the coming month!
