Mike Ashley is set to back Steve Bruce and hand him a £50million “war chest” this summer, according to Alan Nixon.
His latest piece for The Sun contradict previous figures released elsewhere, with it recently reported that a budget of just £12m could be made available, however it’s now claimed that the NUFC owner will reward Bruce for our impressive end to the season – seeing us go from relegation contenders to 12th.
The same article writes that Joe Willock is top of the shopping list for Bruce, stating that Arsenal could slap a huge £30million price tag on the midfielder.
The Sun also claim that Liverpool’s Nat Phillips also features highly on Bruce’s wanted list, reporting that he’ll soon make a ‘formal move’ for the £10m-rated 24-year-old who could struggle for game time next season now Van Dijk, Gomez and Matip are fit again.
We have been heavily linked with a move for Celtic’s Kristoffer Ajer, but it remains to be seen whether it would be one or the other – especially when some have tipped us to sign TWO centre-backs this summer.
Our recent calculations – which you can read here – put our spending power at around £30million using the club’s money alone.
Would Ashley be reaching into his own personal pocket to find an added £20million when he could be on the verge of selling up? It seems unlikely.
That said, Alan Nixon has called a few Toon transfers – he was the first to report on Vilca and Fernandez’s arrivals – so it’ll be interesting to see whether there’s truth in suggestions Mike Ashley will loosen the purse strings this summer.

‘Warchest’ ffs, £50 million is hardly a warchest but more like the TAs weekend ammunition budget.
Love how the Sun has contradicted itself, but I suppose when yoir using other people’s information them you’re never wrong.
An original article with believable facts and quotes would be a breath of fresh air. Too much too ask lol
