NUFC have bid rejected for La Liga star – Premier League duo now ‘interested’ – Report

According to new reports, Newcastle United have had a recent bid rejected for Celta Vigo star Brais Méndez.

This comes from Spanish outlets AS and El Desmarque, who claim that we made a big move to sign the 24-year-old back in January – only to have our offer turned down by the La Liga side.

Although no fee is mentioned, AS state that we came forward with a ‘succulent’ offer – however they were in no mood to sell their home-grown star at the time.

A few months later, the same report claims that Southampton, Norwich, Lyon and an unnamed London club are now competing with Newcastle for the winger’s signature.

Méndez has just come off the back of a breakthrough season, bagging nine goals in 34 games for the Sky Blues.

He was actually on standby to be called up to Luis Enrique’s Spain squad for Euro 2020, with him one of several players being looked at after a COVID outbreak threatened to derail their pre-tournament plans.

The versatile attacker – who can play down either flank, as a number 10 or false number 9 – has only been capped once by the national side, but did score on his debut in a 1-0 win over Bosnia.

Who knows if we’ll reignite our interest this summer – or if we did even make an official bid in January – but this is another name to add to the list of potential targets!
