Sky Sports: NUFC back in contract talks with player after Porto & Burnley show interest

Sky Sports have revealed this afternoon that Jacob Murphy has received interest from Porto and Burnley.

As a result, they report that Newcastle United have initiated another round of contract talks with the much improved wing-back, hoping to see him sign a new long-term deal at St James’ Park this summer.

Some have reported that the 26-year-old is at risk of leaving on a free this summer, however Sky Sports insist that he in fact has ONE more year left on his deal – meaning he is contracted to the club until June 2022 – and ‘not for sale’.

Here’s a snippet from their latest piece:

Newcastle are expected to hold further talks with Jacob Murphy over a new contract amid interest from other clubs.

Portuguese side Porto, as well as Burnley, are said to be keen on the 26-year-old, who finished the Premier League season strongly.

But the Magpies are insisting Murphy, who has only one year left on his contract on Tyneside, is not for sale and they want him to sign a new long-term deal.

The Mail’s Craig Hope reported last week that a new deal was imminent for the former Norwich City star, yet Sky Sports’ report suggests there’s still work to be done.

The winger turned wing-back was without doubt our most improved player of 2020/21, going from a potential £10m flop who looked a level below the Premier League to a regular part of Steve Bruce’s side who shone at both ends of the field over the second half of last season.

Bruce said this when asked about Murphy’s future before the summer break: “I sincerely hope that we tie Jacob down. He’s played a big part in the season. I’ve been very, very pleased with him.”
