Steve Bruce makes contact with Manchester United over the signing of 3 players – The Athletic

According to The Athletic, Steve Bruce has ‘alerted his contacts’ at Manchester United over his need for defensive reinforcements this summer.

As a result, the same piece reveals that Newcastle have made enquiries over the availability of Red Devils trio Axel Tuanzebe, Brandon Williams and Phil Jones – three defenders who could be allowed to leave over the coming months.

The BBC confirmed yesterday that Williams – a versatile full-back and England U21 star – is available for loan, with talkSPORT reporting just a few hours later that he’s back on Bruce’s radar.

As for Tuanzebe and Jones, both are centre-backs at opposite ends of their career. For me, Jones is a has-been and sick note on big wages we’d do well to avoid, while Tuanzebe is a talented young defender who has the athleticism, pace and power we lack at the back.

Here’s a snippet from The Athletic’s piece:

Bruce is believed to have alerted his contacts at Old Trafford to Newcastle’s need for defensive reinforcements.

Phil Jones, Axel Tuanzebe and Brandon Williams, a full-back, have been the subject of previous enquiries from Newcastle, when Bruce asked to be kept informed of their respective situations going forward.

Williams’ versatility – he can play down either flank – would be useful, however I would like to see us go for Tuanzebe if a deal was there to be done.

Both would be handy signings, but it may have to be one or the other given you can only sign ONE player on loan from a single Premier League club.
