According to the Sunday Mirror, Portuguese international Rafa Silva is back on Newcastle United’s radar this summer.
The Benfica star was linked with a move to Tyneside during Rafa Benitez’s time at the club, however it’s now reported that the players agent is attempting to strike a deal to see him arrive at St James’ Park.
Interestingly, his agent – Antonio Araujo – claimed we were keen on signing Silva the summer Steve Bruce was appointed, stating “they (Newcastle) are one of those interested” when asked about his future back in 2019.
A pinch of salt is needed with this one, with the report stating that we are leading the race for his signature and at the ‘top of the list’ after talks with a host of Premier League clubs so far this summer.
He’s looked a threat during the bits I’ve seen of him at Euro 2020 and may well be a player our recruitment team have been watching, but are we really going to spend £20m-plus on a 28-year-old winger if Bruce’s budget is believed to be incredibly tight this summer?
Who knows, Ashley may spend more than we anticipate if a Saudi takeover officially falls through after arbitration, however I’m not holding my breath with this one.
