NUFC could cash in on duo, despite both signing new deals this summer – The Athletic

According to The Athletic, Newcastle United could be tempted to cash in on both Fabian Schar and Dwight Gayle this summer.

Chris Waugh’s latest piece confirms that both have signed extensions at the club – Schar has been tied down for a further year and Gayle’s agreed to a three-year deal – however it seems their futures on Tyneside are anything but secure.

The report states that this summer could be the final opportunity we have to receive a substantial fee for either, meaning both may be sold if decent offers arrive.

Here’s a snippet from the article itself:

“Despite being tied down for another year, it is not entirely certain that Schar will be at St James’ Park come the start of the 2021-22 campaign.

“Bruce is not necessarily actively looking to sell Schar but, given that the defender is 29 and this may be the final opportunity for Newcastle to recoup any sort of a fee for him, the centre-back could – like Dwight Gayle, who has signed a three-year contract extension that is also yet to be confirmed by the club – still depart if a decent offer comes in for him.”

With Gayle anything but reliable as a back-up option to Callum Wilson and set to turn 32 later this year, we’d be wise to sell up while we can and spend the money received on a younger, more capable option.

In all honesty, it feels like we’ve only handed him this new deal to protect his value and avoid losing a previously £15m-rated player on a free transfer.

As for Schar, he’s a brilliant player on his day and will return to Tyneside on the back of a decent run at this summer’s Euros, but he hasn’t always been in Bruce’s plans and has sometimes looked a shadow of his former self as a result.

Cashing in on both while we can could be a smart move – especially when our limited transfer budget probably needs all the help it can get!
