NUFC talent spotted training with first-team after another superb loan spell – One to watch?

Following another impressive loan spell away from St James’ Park, it looks like Steve Bruce has invited Kelland Watts to train with the first-team this summer.

With our centre-back department an ageing one and Bruce on the lookout for reinforcements in a department that’s not getting any younger, the 21-year-old Geordie could be one to watch over the coming months.

He’s returned from a standout loan spell in League One with Plymouth and will be a player to keep an eye on over pre-season, with the latest training pictures showing him mixing it with the senior squad – not the U23’s.

A Championship move could be next for the 6ft 4′ defender, but with a limited budget available to Bruce, could this be the year he ‘does a Sean Longstaff’ and gets fast tracked towards first-team contention?

I can’t claim to have seen much of him at Plymouth last season, however he looked a class above the rest in the games I did see, with him mobile for his height, dominant in the air and more than comfortable carrying the ball out of defence.

As things stand, it seems more likely we sell Lejeune, sign another centre-back and secure Watts another season-long loan move, yet it feels like 2021/22 could be a big season for the Alnwick for our U23 talent.

One to watch in upcoming friendlies against the likes of York, Doncaster and Rotherham?
