Fresh from signing a new SIX-year deal at St James’ Park, Newcastle United have released a truly brilliant interview with Jacob Murphy.
Not only is he living the Geordie dream – being a boyhood fan with a mother from Birtley and Grandparents in Gateshead – he has overcome real adversity to get where he is today.
He’s gone from a rabbit in the headlights who looked a level below the Premier League to a first-team regular revitalised at right wing-back, with him undoubtedly our most improved player for 2020/21.
Here’s what he’s told NUFC TV in an emotional interview (which you can watch in full here), looking back on childhood photos in his Newcastle United kit and vowing to give back to the fans who’ve believed in him over the past year:
“Two years of resilience, pure graft and showing a relentless attitude to never quit”, and he’s now reaping the rewards.
It wasn’t long ago he looked destined to be a £10m flop, with him struggling for game time and doing little to impress during a loan spell at West Brom, but he came back from a year at Sheffield Wednesday a new man and determined to break into Bruce’s plans.
It took time, however he ended last season in superb form and appears to be our first choice right wing-back heading into 2021/22.
A brilliant interview, a great character and one of the success stories of the past year at St James’ Park, with his hard work and passion for Newcastle United shining through during tough times.
“Jacob Murphy, he’s one of our own!’
