‘Exclusive’ claims NUFC are closing in on £5m defender after hijacking rival bid

Newcastle United are now in ‘pole position’ to sign Spurs defender Cameron Carter-Vickers, according to Football Insider.

Their ‘exclusive’ claims we have hijacked Celtic’s bid to bring him to Scotland and are the new favourites to land the centre-back this summer – providing we match Tottenham’s £5m asking price.

The 23-year-old American is surplus to requirements in North London having made just four cup appearances for Tottenham since graduating from their academy in 2016.

His career to date has largely been spent on loan – a pattern that continued last season – where he spent his time at Bournemouth in the Championship.

He excelled under former Toon defender Jonathan Woodgate on the South Coast, cementing himself as a key member of the side that narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League.

The Athletic reported last month that our first-team coach Graeme Jones recommended Carter-Vickers to Bruce, having mentored him during spells with Luton and Bournemouth.

Bruce seems set on bringing in a centre-back or two this summer, with Florian Lejeune expected to be sold and Fabian Schar linked with a return to Germany.

Would you be happy to see us bring Carter-Vickers in?
