Newcastle United have announced that Callum Wilson is the club’s new number nine, taking the shirt from Joelinton ahead of the 2021/22 season.
As a result, the Brazilian has been handed the number 7 jersey – a shirt previously worn by the recently released Andy Carroll.
Here’s the official video released by the club this afternoon, showing Joelinton and last season’s top scorer donning their new numbers in the newly released Castore kit:
Here’s what Wilson told NUFC TV after being handed the famous shirt:
“You’re playing for the badge on the front ultimately but you’re wearing a special number on the back & it’s just about doing it justice, playing well & helping the team.”
Hats off to Joelinton here. Wilson has often talked up the no.9 shirt, but always said that he’d never demand it – suggesting the £40m Brazilian has done the right thing and offered it to last season’s top scorer.
The only issue is, that controversial Castore kit has them looking like two number fours!
