Newcastle lose pre-season opener in York – but biggest concern is latest injury blow

The few Newcastle fans who snuck in may have enjoyed their day in the sun, but our performance failed to match up to the weather as York City scored late to come away with a surprise 1-0 win.

It was, however, a good work out in tough conditions against a spirited side who gave a very good account of themselves – even if the result may seem an alarming one.

Another thought to remember; we wouldn’t have got carried away had we won 7-0 today, so we shouldn’t be too concerned about a 1-0 defeat.

After all, arguably the biggest worry coming away from this is the injury to Joelinton – along with Hayden’s first-half scare – not the fact we’ve just been beaten by a National League North team.

STARTING XI: Langley, Murphy, Fernandez, Lascelles (c), Watts, Ritchie, Hayden, Hendrick, Fraser, Joelinton, Wilson.

SUBS: Thompson, Clark, Dummett (68), Lewis (45), M Longstaff (60), S Longstaff (60), Saint-Maximin (45), Muto (78), Gayle (18).

It was a scruffy start to the game in the North Yorkshire sunshine, and a concerning moment arrived just 10 minutes in as Isaac Hayden went down holding his knee.

A worrying sign given he’d not long recovered from a knee injury that ended his 2020/21 season early, however he managed to continue. Panic over, until Joelinton then pulled up.

The Brazilian had started brightly in his new no.7 shirt and did brilliantly to skip past his man and almost set up a tap-in, but that came at a cost and he appeared to have felt something in the top of his leg.

He continued for the next five minutes but was clearly uncomfortable, seeing Dwight Gayle come on in his place just 18 minutes in. A shame and yet another reminder that another striker is desperately needed – especially now we’ve released Andy Carroll!

A decent move involving Murphy, Hayden, Wilson, Gayle and Fraser then led to our first near miss of the match, with the Scot very nearly lobbing the goalkeeper from a tight angle after getting in behind.

The home side were holding their own and forced Dan Langley into the first save of the game just three minutes later, as Duckworth’s stinging effort was tipped wide by the 6ft 7′ giant.

Fresh from a drinks break, Jacob Murphy very nearly put us ahead on the half-hour mark. Fernandez started the move with a cross-field pass to pick out Ritchie, whose back-post delivery was met by Murphy – only to be parried well by the York City stopper.

Another big chance then arrived, this time at Callum Wilson’s feet after Ritchie and Fraser combined well down the left and cut the ball back to our new number 9. He sold the defender with a drop of the shoulder, but saw his goal-bound effort well blocked by an outstretched leg.

There was little else to report in what was a disjointed and one-paced opening 45, however Kell Watts enjoyed a few impressive ball carries out of the back – showing Maguire-esque confidence in possession for a player with his 6ft 4′ frame.

Joelinton also looked bright before being forced off and Jacob Murphy was a constant out ball down the right, picking up from where he left off last season.

The second half got underway and Steve Bruce had made two changes, bringing on Saint-Maximin and Jamal Lewis for Callum Wilson and Isaac Hayden.

10 minutes into the restart and there was little to report, aside from a Saint-Maximin burst that saw him hacked down on the edge of the box. Matt Ritchie stepped up but saw his free-kick hit the wall – and his follow up effort wasn’t much better.

Just before the hour mark, the Longstaff brothers were then given the call just before the hour mark, replacing Jeff Hendrick and Ryan Fraser.

Seconds after coming on, Sean Longstaff lost the ball in a bad area and York got in down the left. The ball flashed across the box and Clayton Donaldson prodded towards goal, only to see his effort blocked well by Watts’ outstretched leg.

It was a boiling hot day and our first game back from a two-month break, but there was a real lack of pace about our play, with Saint-Maximin standing out like a sore thumb after others around him tired.

On that note, it was his wing play and inviting cross that very nearly led to our opening goal, as Dyson’s diving header was just tipped over his own cross bar by the York City GK.

Just over 20 minutes remaining and Paul Dummett replaced Fernandez, a change that was followed by a big chance for Matt Ritchie just five minutes later, as the wing-back smashed Murphy’s clever cut-back straight at Whitley.

75 minutes on the clock and our biggest chance of the game arrived. Saint-Maximin broke free on the break, fed Gayle down the left and got the ball back after a smart reverse pass from the NUFC striker put ASM in on goal.

ASM thought he had just the keeper to beat, until a miraculous last ditch challenge from Josh King saw his goal-bound strike fly over the bar just as we expected the net to bulge.

Muto then replaced Gayle with little over 10 minutes to play, giving the Japanese international his first appearance in black and white shirt since returning from a loan spell in La Liga.

Just as the game looked destined to fizzle out, York took the lead. Barrow swung in a cross from the left, which was met brilliantly by Michael Duckworth – whose header looping header left young Langley rooted to the spot.

1-0 to the National League North team and a big cheer from the home fans – and rightly so!

Three minutes of added time came to nothing and York held on for the win.

A good work out. A bad performance and another reminder that we need another striker – especially if Joelinton’s injury is a bad one.

  1. 7 of that starting 11 would likely be starting the first game of the season – with another 2 (Fraser & Hendrick) on the bench – so only the keeper & young CB getting bled.

Why he hasn’t used this game to look at the fringe players, like the Longstaffs, Gayle and Muto – even the likes of young Elliott to see what role they might have in the first team squad this season is beyond me.
To risk injury to key players in such a nothing game is just mental.

Of course the key players need a pre season – but York away weeks before the season kicks off again offers them very little.

I don’t think there’s even been a season in over 30 years where I’ve ever cared less about the start of a season.

  2. I dont really get what is happening in the UK with Covid. You had 54,000 cases on Friday. Chicago, with a population of 3 million, had 57 cases and 1 death. If you extrapolate the Chicago population to that of the UK that would be the quivalent of about 1,200 cases.

The vaccination rate in Chicago is lower than the UK. 50% compared to 68%. I dont get what is going on. Also, South Tyneside now has the highest rate of Covid in the country.

Lastly, I am going to New Mexico in 2 months so I checked their Covid rates. They have a population of 2 million and new cases are running at about 100 a day.

You can see why scientists are worried about the UK being a super spreader when their rates are 45 times that of a densely populated city like Chicago.

And Boris has no clue. He says he is not isolating and now he is. And he tried to spin it like it was all just some fleeting fancy that he would ignore the rules that his Govt has imposed on everybody else. He changed his mind when there was bad media coverage. It is as simple as that.

  3. Sadly I’m totally indifferent to the york result today. The under 23s didn’t do much better with a 1-1 draw against Harrogate I think. Oh dear. I know it’s the first game of pre season but we really cannot beat York? ???

  6. Only a month ’til the season starts, and pretty much nobody linked except a further loan for Willock. That might be the best we can hope for until this takeover is settled one way or the other. Even if Ashley and Stavely win their cases there is no way it will all be concluded by the end of the transfer window. It would take a leap of faith for the consortium to assume it will proceed because that is not guaranteed even if they win their cases. There is also no way Ashley would front the money for transfers if he is not GUARANTEED the takeover. We are sorta f#cked.

Talking about being up **** creek without a paddle – that is England at the moment. Sorry to dwell on Covid but you are all stuck and going nowhere for international travel for the next 6 months. Do you think the Yanks would let you in if there is ANOTHER spike in cases and with the new variant that seems much more transmittable. The Germans? The Italians? Good luck with that if UK cases are 3 to 4 times the number of other countries’ populations.

In the past week I have watched The Euros and the British Open. Nobody social distancing and nobody wearing a mask. It is like Boris and Co are just trying to wish this away. But the numbers are not in their favour and would you trust a man with that haircut to make you a cup of tea never mind run a country?

I listened to Boris’ speech today. Rambling nonsense. He is saying the country has to be opened now because it would/will become worse in the Autumn.

They are even backtracking a bit and saying people should take responsibility for themselves and wear masks if they want, and social distance. There are 500,000 people self isolating in the UK as I write this. How much more evidence do they need to see this is a bad idea?

Will football grounds be filled again? Probably, judging by the behaviour at Wembley and The Open. Will this lead to a further spread? YES.

I think vaccinations need to get up to like 80-85% for Boris’s plan to work. I am not a DR but I do have common sense. Meanwhile, the UK will become the pariahs of Europe and probably North America as well. I can see total bans in Germany for example, even if you are double vaccinated.

And the Chronic were writing articles about staycations today. They said a week for a family of four in Morpeth costs 4,000 quid. Last time I was back in England I stopped into Morpeth for a cup of coffee. They would have to pay me 4,000 pound to stay there and I love the NE coast.

All of this in the name of personal freedom. Do you let a drug addict self harm because their right to freedom protects their action? An anorexic to starve herself to death? No, you help them and in a country that is supposedly advanced and 1st world, you protect some people from themselves.

  7. If you just let people run around doing whatever they want in the name of freedom then why do we have a Police Force and an Army? All you have to do to see the number of nutters out there is to look at the Chronicle reporting of Crown Court cases or the Neanderthal faces of the thugs who stormed Wembley.

  11. There is no way that Stavely saw this latest delay coming, otherwise she would not have gone on that PR offensive in the past few weeks. I said yesterday on here that we were screwed whatever the result of arbitration because the takeover could not possibly happen before the tranfer window shuts. This confirms it. But it gets even worse…

With arbitration not until 2022 that means Stavely and Co could not have the January tranfer window to dig us out of whatever mess Brucie-boy gets us into. And you can be guaranteed he will have us fighting relegation again. We are unlikely to have the get-out-of-jail-free card that was Joe Willock. Remember, Bruce wasnt even starting him until forced to by his form and goals. He saved Bruce’s bacon but I highly doubt Arsenal will loan him out again. Hmmm… Bacon.

This is just such a mess. What is our budget? Because nothing is happening on this until next summer at the earliest when we will know our PL status. I am about 50/50 now that the Saudis will walk. Just a gut feeling, no inside knowledge. But my gut has been right so far. I have watched Wraith’s you tube shows and the so-called 3 Amigos all claimed inside knowlede of imminent takeover. Many times, week after week. I guess the Geordie Dentist and Co will look a bit stupid now if is even possible for them to look more stupid. They have spent 2 hours every friday night saying they have inside knowledge from their “credible” sources. Was that Heinz and HP. Nobody will ever believe another word they say. I never did anyway, I thought they were a bunch of clowns. All high ups formerly in NUST, which tells you a lot.

And The Pledge that was set up by NUST. It has 125k which sounds like a lot but at that rate it would take about 10 years to amass enough cash to buy 1% of NUFC. That was a totally daft scheme as well, which I have said many times.

  12. This is just so depressing. Our first PL game is August 15 and Boris and Pals say that as of August 17 everybody will have to have 2 vaxes to attend large social gatherings. They are also backtracking on Freedom Day saying it is the individuals personal responsibility to stay safe and that mask wearing and social distancing are still a good idea.

It is like they didnt think this through. Below are pictures of a Newcastle nightclub that reopened at 12am on Sunday. They have like a month of this before the new restrictions apply. The data shows that people under 30 are the least likely to get vaccinated and they all look about that age or less to me.

    https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/gallery/newcastle-freedom-day-clubs-reopen-21085531

So what happens with season tickets? Will anybody want one? Will Ashley give them away? Will he make a “statement signing” to boost sales. Even if we get a few players in and SJP is half full it will only take one bad performance for all of the pent up frustration to come out and Brucie to be shouted down. It will make the derision shown in Pard’s last months pale in comparison. Good luck you pie eating bent nosed tw@t, you are going to need it.

  13. The more I think about this, the more I think the Saudis will just walk. The arbitration and the CAT case are Ashley’s babies, not theirs. I fully expect them to move on to a Spanish or Italian club that have similar potential to us. I have no idea who the current owners are but Valencia or Lazio would look appealing to me.

You have a once in a lifetime opportunity in Spain because of the debt and general bad ownerhip at Real Madrid and Barcelona. Plus Messi is getting on. This is the time that their duopoly can be broken. They take most of the sponsorship and TV money but the Saudis dont need that. They want the exposure, the sportswashing.

      (Quote)

  14. Gone from 50/50 to 90/10 on takeover failing. It is done lads and lasses. The Saudis are not going to wait another year. We may as well forget about the court and arb cases because they mean nothing to us. All that will happen at best is the PL get a slap on the wrist and Ashley gets a bit of comp. Do we really care about that? Time to move on. And that is what is really depressing because we are staring relegation in the face unless Fatty acts now and gets us a striker and midfielder, minimum.

I read a few comments on The Mag and some are saying they are done with NUFC now. Life is too short etc for another season of Bruce-ball. I am getting there. I watched the games from home last year because of Covid but I am not sure if I would have even gone to the pub to watch our dire football, especially Nov to Feb where it is **** weather in Chicago and a slog to get to the bar 2 miles away that shows it. I dont drink and drive so I have to either walk or take public transport to get there, and you have to ask yourself – is it worth it?

I think Fatty will get a shock with the non-renewals of season tickets. I dont think I have seen fans this low, even when we were relegated. It is the convergence of Covid and despair. A loss of hope. Why would you bother getting a season ticket to watch that shyte and to tune in to Brucie’s drivvel every week?

Sharpy mate. The Saudis are going to walk away. They did it once already. I went from 50% to 90% certainty. Now I am at 99% certainty. This is the opposite of what they want – sportswashing and good publicity. All this is now is a headache to them.

The Fat Man might end up with a bit of comp but that means nothing to us fans.

What this has shown though is that a lot of journos and supposedly In -The – Know – Bloggers, podcasters and youtubers know the square root of you know what. The first names on that list would be Ryder and Douglas at The Chronic, and then The Geordie Dentist and Steve Hastey on Wraith’s channel. They have been dealing in misinformation and supposed facts that they know from their “contacts” that they cannot reveal but will be public knowledge “soon” for about a year now.

If this takeover saga has taught me one thing, it is that there are a lot of gobshytes out there pretending they have inside information and informers and they know nothing. They know less than me and I am observing this from 4,000 miles away.

  20. I know. I am off on Covid again. But just a fact for you. Canada have closed the US border for about a year now. They are opening to fully vaccinated US people from August 9. That meant that I could not have gone to Vancouver for a full year, or the Canadian side of Niagara falls. The US/Canada border stretches for 1500 mile FYI. So Lands end to John O Groats twice.

Now tell me when Canada will let Brits in if there are 100,000 Covid cases per day?

I doubt I could get back into the US if I visit the UK the way things stand.

I am telling you. This Boris plan and the pictures of morons in nightclubs will make the UK the Pariahs of Europe for at least 3 months and probably 6.

The rates will drop after this 3rd wave peaks, but the memories for other European countries’ citizens will linger longer. Good luck having Christmas in Salzburg or skiing in the Alps. It aint happening.

This latest event now means that CAT will happen before arbo and not alongside it as it were. This is a better outcome for the club as it’s being made public. Maybe the club also withheld information in the knowledge arbo would be delayed. If the CAT case goes in our favor with all PL dirty laundry coming out it would make a decision to go against us at arbo, which is behind closed doors, harder.
This could oddly, be a positive

  23. I keep reading Newcastle fans claiming the PL is corrupt and a bunch of dodgy dealers or whatever as of this is the PL v NUFC only?!.

Do people forget that there are 20 clubs in the PL, all of deal with the same people we are now – if they were so dodgy wouldnt a few more of the other clubs spoke out about how difficult the PL are to deal with?!. It would entirely be in their best interest to support each other.

The ‘big 6’ weren’t looking to set up the ESL because of how corrupt the PL are – infact, they wanted to stay part of the PL and run it alongside the ESL – it was the PL that stood their ground & said no.

I don’t think it’s ideal to push this back to 2022 at all. I’d have thought that all parties would want to bring closure to this ASAP – it’s dragged out long enough now.
But if the PL can push it back to 2022 – it suggests that 1. We/Staves has done something wrong to enable them. 2. This clearly isn’t being done amicably, coz pushing back to 2022 feels like a big F you!!

Kim – that’s the other bit I find hilarious really. Newcastle fans shouting about transparency & the PL involved in dodgy dealing with the top 6 clubs to stop this going through … we are accusing the PL of an awful lot – not too many picking up on the hypocrisy that it’s the Saudis we are trying to push forward here by the way!!.
There’s not been much transparency in what actually happened to the murdered journalist – or the dodgy dealings of the piracy.

As a Newcastle fan of over 30 years, the most important thing for me in replacing Ashley, is that we get the right people. The transparency I want is that of who will take over our club & what are their intentions on how to run it – and not just having pound signs in my eyes (I’m not suggesting you do by the way – I’m suggesting that’s more the motive of many of those shouting on about this).

I’m also sick of hearing from Staves & her husband. I see the husband has took to social media again today to accuse the PL of playing games – social media is a classy & professional way of point scoring like isn’t it?!.
I have no faith in those 2 at all. I wasn’t impressed with Staves on Talksport – I don’t get why she was even on there?! – and I’m not impressed with the husbands constant use of social media.

  37. Sharpy: I listened to Jordan and he made sense. He should know some of the inner workings of the PL since was was past Chairman of Palace. The problem with him, like a lot of pundits, is that they like to rile people up thinking it will boost ratings. He was using explosive language with Stevely thinking she might bite and getting into some sort of slanging match. When Jordon isnt on the wind up he says sensible things.

Its a bit like Rio Ferdinand who is not a stupid man and says sensible things when not trying to be controversial. Now Savage and Sutton are just idiots.

These people are all on the wind up most of the time because they think controversy sells and keeps them in the public eye and gets them ratings.

A lot of what Simon Jordan says makes sense to me on a lot of football topics. People don’t like him because he calls out the bullshit. His points are logical, clear and concise a lot of the time.

Stavely came across as a stuttering amateur when she faced him the other day. She tried to spin and deflect and even that came across as sloppy, never mind when she tried to answer a question directly. It was a disaster.

And Jordans point about fans being gullible was proved by the reaction to the interview. A lot of fans on this very website started slagging him off. The car crash that was Stavelys interview and her delivery/conduct during it went straight over their heads.

  39. I have to repeat that I think any Saudi involvement in a takeover is a dead duck. It is producing the opposite of what they want now and giving them bad publicity. Stavely’s PR campaign had given me a bit of hope as she was implying that there was a chance of reaching a conclusion with all of this. But it turns out that she was more hopeful than correct.

I never believed idiots like the Geordie Dentist and thought him and other self promoters were blowing smoke up everybody’s @rses and acting like they were/are In-The-Knows. They know nothing and neither does NUST.

The only one I see coming out of this with any credibility is Luke Edwards. Maybe he is just a doubting Thomas but he has been right.

  40. Back to Covid. I hope I was being a bit Chicken Little because there was a drop in numbers in the UK, even if only for a day. The experts had been correct though with their projections of around 50k cases a day at this time. They have been saying there would be spike to 100k a day. I hope not, but they have been right so far. Intuitively, it doesnt make sense that cases would rise so quickly when so many people are vaccinated. But it happened, and I do not believe a word that comes out of BJs or his Ministers mouths.

His Business Minister is now on the case. He says he is a libertarian and that’s why he wants easing of restrictions – that people should take personal responsibility. They are all Libertarians until there is a crisis and then suddenly they want the Govt to step in. Think of the banking crisis of 2009. They wanted bailouts for their Pals from a Govt that they had been desperately trying to cut funding for.

  41. Eric – I don’t think they care about Covid cases anymore – as long as they can manage the ones that progress into hospitalisations or deaths. I think you’ll see them plough on though providing those figures stay manageable. They seem happy that the double jab gives people enough protection to be on your ar$e for a week, but not require anything most than rest and isolation (and over the counter meds).
It’s heard immune over here now mate & providing they can manage it, so be it. It’s this stupid trace app that’s the problem now – you can’t have heard immune & isolate at the same time.

We have a lot of youth coming through, Woodman, Watts, Anderson and Sorenson, possibly Vilca, White and Flaherty. We have been linked with more youth in Willock, Gallagher and Tuanzebe. I’m not suggesting that these make the starting 11, but that does release a lot of aging stars who are also not starting to raise cash. It’s not like we would need a lot of cash anyway, Willems is available on a free and a striker such as Edouard from Celtic would be £15-£20m. That difference is easily raised. Our starting 11 is what we ended last season with, but we have youth and energy on the bench.

Wraith had one of his Pals on explaining how this delay in the arb case is actually a good thing. his reasoning is that the Arb case is private and the CAT case is public so will lead to exposure of the PL and “Big Six” as corrupt. He even speculates that Masters and Hoffman will resign. That really isnt the point though is it? What has happened is there has been a delay in any judgement meaning we have no funds for tranfers and are stuck with Bruce. He will most likely relegate us.

Meanwhile the Saudis will have their dirty laundry in public as well as the PLs. This is not what they were looking for, they were looking for good publicity by associating with a successful NUFC. I think it is naive in the extreme to think the Saudis will stick around and watch as this public theatre plays out and hope we are not relegated.

These people on Wraith’s channel have been wrong about everything takeover related so far. And now we are supposed to believe them?!? I am bringing up Wraith and pals because they seem to be the self-appointed spokespeople on all things takeover. Wraith was on Talksport this morning with Jordan. Wraith doesnt come across badly but I think he has some panelists on his shows who are idiots.

But that is not what matters it is more optics (audio?). She did not come across as credible.

    * There is nothing happening with this takeover this season and I am 99% certain the Saudis will walk because they do not want this sort of bad publicity. They have walked once already, remember.

    * We are stuck with Bruce and a relegation fight. We need Willock and another striker to even have a chance of 17th.

    * The CAT case means nothing even if Ashley wins. It will not oust Masters or Hoffman. It may give them a little bit of bad press for a couple of days but they arent going anywhere. If it is ruled in Ashley’s favour, there will be an appeal.

    * KEITH PATTERSON IS AN IDIOT. Foisting his wrong headed assumptions and opinions on NUFC fans via twitter and Wraith. That’s the ones on Wraith’s channel for 2 hours on a Friday spouting takeover nonsense.

I am almost to the point of not believing a word Stavely says as well.

Nobody on this site has gone off the deepend and claimed to be in-the-know. Same with the Harrisons. They are very level headed even if their geriatric crew just bicker about nothing.

So, you have to accept this now for what it is. Bruce and Ashley for another year. The Saudis will/have walked. The Chronic will make up stuff about the CAT case that will go nowhere and the Arbitration will fade and die. Masters and Hoffman will still be in power at the PL with perhaps a slap on the wrist. And the currupt 6 will still be the corrupt 6.

Prem – I agree in the main, but a starting pot of £10m isn’t enough imo – especially when you consider Ashley was handed a free £19m for a takeover that looks like it isn’t happening.
I certainly don’t expect a £50m pot, but £10m does not keep you in the PL when your best hope (only hope) of goals is known to be injury prone.

I agree that there are some decent players available on free & some good loan deals to be had. But goals keep you in this league & we don’t have enough.

Agreed mate. Jordan had name called prior to Staves phone in when they were discussing NUFC without her participation. But when she rang in I don’t think Jordan was trying to goad her or pick at her.
She was already emotionally charged because of what he said about her days before – but she brought that into this call, not him.
She expected he would and was charged – but when he didn’t and asked a perfectly valid question & raised perfectly valid points, she wasn’t ready to answer them because she was ready to joust.

He done her over without trying really. But this is someone entrusted in brokering hundreds of millions deals – and she flipped coz Jordan called her a ratbag ?.
I don’t care how much you want Ashley out – that should worry you.

I’ve waited the Steve Wraith phone in as well & that’s equally as ridiculous.

Eric – I don’t think he has an attention seeking agenda. He’s on Talksport so gets the attention already. Yes he can make some of his points in a ridiculing manner sometimes – but in the main I think he makes good points. I’m not saying I also agree with every word he says, and there are times I think he risks losing his point because of the ridicule – but I have agreed with all he has had to say about our takeover so far.

  59. Steve Wraith went onto Talksport claiming he has contacts on either side of this deal. Steve Wraith is a former doorman in Newcastle who now does podcasts – most of which is on ‘true crime’. His Newcastle podcasts get around 3k views & he has regular guests of SuperMac – who was a great player but does not have his finger on the pulse at SJP, his other regular guest is some Gateshead MP ??‍♂️.

The irony is the spend most of their time ridiculing Bruce & Ashley (and rightly so at times), yet the second Jordan offers the same back Staves & Wraith coz THEY phone into the show HE does, they don’t like it?!.

Wraith said, come onto my podcast and face the Newcastle fans – Newcastle fans can ring into Talksport whenever they like!!.

Jordan also said that the producers wanted to just have Staves & Wraith leave a recording for Jordan & White to discuss, and Jordan asked they be allowed to make their points in person. I think Jordan was respectful & rationale in both exchanges.

I think part of the reason he comes across as ‘attention seeking’ as you describe or ridiculing is because at times he finds himself talking about clubs and football matters he really doesn’t give a **** about.

  60. If we are looking at free agents & loans.

Free agents – Williems at LB is an obvious one. But if we are concerned about his injuries, Alioski has been released by Leeds & I think he would be a decent option too.

Nathaniel Clyne is available at RB. If we wanted to raise some money selling Manquillo and Kraft, then he’s an option – though I think keeping Manq would be a better one. Murphy would be my choice as RWB so any option is back up really.

Loans – I’d be really pleased if we get Willock again and Connor Gallagher was decent for WBA last season – I’d take him too. Beyond those I’d be looking at the likes of Batshuayi or Origi but both are out of contract next summer so Chelsea/Liverpool may be looking to offload them for a bit of cash this summer.

When this happens for the hundreth time you start to doubt their connections and even their truthfulness. Is it all just gobshytery and self promation? My ever reliable aphabetical order says 14th. I am agreeing with that until I see who we sign/loan.

I dont see us playing “front foot” football though so I fear another year of mostly drudgery, a death spiral at some point, but just at the darkest moment there might be a good performance. That has been our pattern for the last 10 years including with Pards and Ugly John. Even with Rafa, except in The Championship. Schteve and Shearer were just disasters.

Eric – not really mate. I think we will get a few new faces in, it will be another long hard slog of a season – very little to get excited about, a handful of decent games with the rest not good at all.
But I also think there will be at least 3 teams worse than us again and we will survive because of that again, rather than because we’ve done well.
But like Sunderland proved – there’s only so many seasons you get away with that before the bubble bursts & you fall like a stone – it will happen eventually, just not this season I reckon.

He says that certain people have duped other people and led them down the garden path. He doesnt name them! I will name them though – Keith Patterson and the Geordie Drunkard and to a lesser extent Steve Hastey.

There are many more who didnt do their job, like all of the “journalists” at The Chronic.
