Following a 1-0 defeat to York on Sunday, Newcastle take on Doncaster Rovers tonight in our second pre-season friendly of the summer.
The team news has arrived ahead of the 7.15pm kick off (delayed from 7pm) at the Keepmoat Stadium, seeing us line up as follows against the League One side:
STARTING 11: (5-2-1-2) – Langley – Murphy, Hayden, Lascelles, Dummett, Lewis – Hendrick, S Longstaff – Fraser – Wilson, Saint-Maximin.
SUBS: Thompson, Clark, Longstaff, Gayle, Fernandez, Watts, Allan, McEntee, Young, Bondswell
The following players are not involved in today’s game:
- Martin Dubravka (injury)
- Elliot Anderson (injury)
- Joelinton (injury)
- Matt Ritchie (injury)
- Jonjo Shelvey (injury)
- Javier Manquillo (injury)
- Yoshinori Muto (illness )
- Karl Darlow (COVID-19)
- Freddie Woodman (self-isolating)
- Mark Gillespie (self-isolating)
- Miguel Almiron (extended break after Copa America)
- Emil Krafth (extended break after Euros)
- Fabian Schar (extended break after Euros)
With Dubravka injured, Darlow recovering from COVID and Gillespie and Woodman forced to self-isolate as close contacts, U23 talent Dan Langley gets another chance in goal.
It’s also interesting to see Matthew Bondswell on the bench – the former RB Leipzig talent who signed with our U23 setup earlier this year.
There’s no Muto – who is ill with a non-COVID related illness – while Joelinton, Ritchie and Manquillo miss out with minor injuries.
The game also comes too soon for Jonjo Shelvey, with the midfielder facing a race against time to be fit enough for next month’s big kick off.
