Our summer transfer window looks set to go from bad to worse this week, with centre back target Axel Tuanzebe now closing in on a move to Aston Villa.
Sky Sports have announced that the Man Utd defender will sign a new one-year extension at Old Trafford before completing a season long loan move to Villa Park.
The 23-year-old was tipped to become our first summer signing by The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards just last week, with The Chronicle also revealing that he and his camp were ‘delighted’ by our initial interest, however Dean Smith’s side appear to have gazumped our loan bid.
An alleged ‘£5m loan fee’ is believed to have been an obstacle we’ve struggled to overcome, with us falling victim to Steve Bruce’s woefully small transfer budget and Mike Ashley’s complete and utter neglect once again.
Perhaps the worst thing is the fact Tuanzebe is unlikely to be a regular starter at Villa while first-choice pair Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa are fit, so it speaks volumes that he’ll join them over us – a side that would’ve been able to offer him regular starts.
Sadly, they are an ambitious club on the up and looking to invest right, left and centre, meanwhile we remain the only EPL side yet to make a single signing this summer.
A real shame as he would’ve been an ideal loan signing, offering us the pace and athleticism we sorely lack in defence, but this latest blow sums up the sorry state we’re in less than two weeks before the new season kicks off.
