Aberdeen fans comment on Matty Longstaff debut after signing NUFC midfielder on loan

It hasn’t taken long for Matty Longstaff to make a position impress at Aberdeen.

After sealing a loan move to the SPL side on Friday, the 21-year-old played his first game for the Scots less than 48 hours later, with former Mag Stephen Glass handing him a start in Sunday’s clash with Ross County.

He couldn’t help them to a win in the end – which would’ve sent them up to 3rd in the table – but impressed in the 1-1 draw alongside former Celtic star Scott Brown.

Here’s what Aberdeen fans had to say about his performance on Twitter, seeing many praise his reliability in possession and energy off the ball:

10 minutes in and already some glimpses of the real quality Matty Longstaff will bring to the team.

Would be good to see Matty play further up the pitch definitely looks like he could cause defenders some issues!

Such an intelligent player, don’t think he wasted many passes.

Like the look of young Matty. Still a bit raw but doesn’t hide, uses the ball well and seems energetic.

Considering some of the cross-field passes he picked out, Longstaff did well to end the game with 94% pass completion. Bodes well.

Longstaff rarely wasted a pass.

Need to keep giving Longstaff the ball, he’ll dictate so much of our play going forward.

Longstaff and Samuels put in a shift.

Some great football played – Samuels and Longstaff look like great additions.

Thought Longstaff looked class as well. Presumably lacking match sharpness so will get better too.

64 minutes in the bank for the local lad and, by the looks of it, an eye-catching first appearance for his new loan club.

It was a surprise to see him end up in Scotland – many believed he was destined for a spell in the Championship – however he needed regular game time after 18 months in the wilderness at Newcastle United, and it looks like he’ll get that with Aberdeen.

Next up for Matty, a trip to Motherwell this weekend.

  1. I just need to ask this question before praising Matty.

Was this post edited before going to press/live?

The reason I ask is because the first 2 lines read perfectly well but what on Earth is going on with that second paragraph??

Well played Matty and all the best in the SPL. I was hoping to see you in the Championship, at Nottm Forest. Maybe next season, although if we carry on our football might be played in League 1.
