Time for ‘Mr. Reliable’ to return to Steve Bruce’s XI – starting at Man Utd this weekend?

A fit again Paul Dummett might just come into contention to make his first appearance of the season against Man Utd on Saturday.

The 29-year-old picked up a calf injury in preseason against Doncaster Rovers and returned to full training before the international break, but is yet to feature for us so far this campaign.

Kenton lad Dummett has been a dependable member of the NUFC setup for several years now and even bagged a last-minute equaliser against Man Utd in a thrilling 3-3 draw back in 2016.

With Newcastle looking shaky in defence so far this season, could bringing Dummett back into the side shore up a backline that has conceded EIGHT goals in three Premier League games.

Telling him to pocket a buoyed up Cristiano Ronaldo on his first game back from injury may be a colossal task, but one thing you are guaranteed with Dummett is work rate, discipline and a willingness to put his body on the line for our cause.

Not only that, we’ve seen him excel on the left side of a three-man defence when fit, with his days at left-back appearing to be numbered – especially while we persist with this 5-3-2 formation.

I don’t think there would be too many Toon fans disappointed if they seen him on the starting line up come 2pm on Saturday.
