Newcastle eyeing January move for Championship star after stunning start to season – Report

According to new reports, Newcastle are taking a close look at Reading star John Swift ahead of the January transfer window.

This comes via an ‘exclusive’ from Football League World, who claim that we are one of several clubs ‘keeping tabs’ on the midfielder following his outstanding start to the new 2021/22 season.

Swift has bagged seven goals and four assists in Reading’s eight Championship games this season, grabbing a hat-trick just a few weeks ago in a 3-3 draw at QPR.

The report claims that Aston Villa, Brentford and Sheffield United are also keen on the 26-year-old – and it’s easy to see why on current form.

The former England U21 star started his career at Chelsea after coming through their Academy, but only managed to play once in the senior side at Stamford Bridge.

It’s been well documented that we were in for another midfielder over the summer, however it seemed it was more of defensive player we wanted, with Hamza Choudhury targeted on deadline day.

With that in mind, are we really going to want more of an attacking playmaker in Swift when we seemed intent on signing a deep-lying ball winner?

Time will tell, but transfer links like this are a little tedious just a few weeks after we failed to deliver a few much needed signings when the window was open!
