Newcastle to ditch Fun88 sponsor in shake up set to impact NINE Premier League clubs – Report

Newcastle could be forced to ditch Fun88 as their shirt sponsor due to the Government banning betting companies from appearing on the front of football shirts.

The Daily Mail are reporting that a white paper is set to be published in the House of Commons this winter that is “almost certain” to include restrictions on football shirts, with a wider view to eventually knuckle down on pitch side advertising and adverts during games.

Nine Premier League clubs – including us – currently have gambling companies on the front of their kits, with betting a football almost becoming synonymous with each other since the sport has been around.

This means that, if the Daily Mail are correct, Newcastle will have no option but to seek a new shirt sponsor – a move that may appear popular with the Toon Army.

The nine clubs impacted would be ourselves, Brentford, Southampton, Wolves, Watford, West Ham, Leeds, Crystal Palace and Burnley.

I, myself, think we have had some nice kits in the past couple of years that have been murdered by Fun88’s tacky design, and would be happy to see the back of them – despite how humorous they may occasionally be on Twitter.

I’d even be tempted to stick Newcastle Brown Ale back on – free of charge – just for old times’ sake.

  1. This is a good move, provided we can attract another sponsor, otherwise we will have Sports Direct on the front and no shirt sponsorship income !!!

  2. Wouldnt be against Brown Ale again, despite it not being brewed in the NE anymore.

But I’d love to see a local business or charity on the front – business wise – Sage springs immediately to mind. Charity – well we obviously have Sir Bobby & Big Al with charities based in the NE I’d happily see getting some advertising.
