Wolves 2-1 Newcastle: Time to sack Steve Bruce before it’s too late

Well, that was absolutely atrocious.

A 2-1 defeat to a Wolves side who never had to get out of second gear to beat us, leaving us 19th in the table and STILL without a win seven games into the new season.

After such a pathetic display and damning defeat, we head into the international break hoping the club finally see sense and sack Steve Bruce now they have two weeks to bring in a fresh face ahead of a clash with Spurs at St James’ Park in 15 days time.

I’d be shocked if we did, as ‘sense’ and Mike Ashley don’t go together, but even he must see us as a sinking ship unless something changes. I honestly believe we’ll be a Championship club this time next year if we allow this to go on any longer and miss yet another opportunity to get rid.

Steve Bruce named an unchanged side for this one, picking the 11 who started last weekend’s 1-1 draw at Watford.

A fair decision based on the fact we created more than enough chances to win last time out, however it didn’t take him long to switch back to a five-man defence in this one.

That came after a promising opening few minutes – which saw us press well and push high up the pitch – turned into disaster when Hwang Hee-Chan got in behind after some good work from Jimenez and slid the ball past Darlow.

Our usually reliable stopper could’ve done better – he didn’t do enough to narrow the angle and could’ve made himself bigger – but it was static defending at best and all too easy.

1-0 Wolves and a pretty awful first half performance until an unlikely equaliser arrived just five minutes before the break.

Few harboured much hope when an injured Joe Willock was replaced by Jeff Hendrick 35 minutes in, yet it was the Irishman who actually got us on level terms after firing past an injured Jose Sa – who’d just collided with Joelinton – from 20 yards.

Saying that, we weren’t level for long. Just over 10 minutes into the second half we conceded yet another cheap goal which was all too similar to the first as our midfield were left for dead by Jimenez – who set up Hwang to score once again from an angle.

It was a good finish, but questions will be asked as to why Darlow was beaten so easily, with him appearing to get his angles wrong for both goals.

The final 30 minutes were painful. No idea where anyone was playing, shocking final ball, non existent build up play and Bruce taking off one of our most creative players in Almiron for Gayle – a player that relies on creativity behind him!

It must be said that Saint-Maximin had a huge chance to make it 2-1 before Wolves’ second, but, in truth, we didn’t deserve a thing from today. Alan Shearer summed it up well with this post-match tweet:

The players didn’t perform today, but Bruce needs to go. It’s been obvious for a long time and we’ll never have a better chance to pull the trigger now the international break is upon us.

  1. Relagation here we come.Cabbage Head looked like a lost man on the sideline. If he loves the club as he says he does he would walk.I suppose it’s about the pay packet and not the club in his Deluded mind.

  2. It didnt seem that the away end got on Bruce’s back too much. That will change in the next 2 weeks. I think there will building anger and resentment. The CAT case has been a distraction but I doubt there will be any news soon. If it goes the wrong way I think there will be bedlam and it will be directed at Bruce.

I think the ire will be directed at Bruce because he is the closest target.

LET”S SEE IF HE GOES TO PORTUGAL FOR 5 DAYS THIS TIME!!! Does he have the balls to do so after he defended himself last break. He’ll probably go to his farm instead. There is no way he will stay in Newcastle and work with the players or the coaches. Players will get at least 4 days off.

  3. Brighton are battering Arsenal. I still think Troussard looks like he has been partying too much with Lou Reed and Pete Docherty.

  4. What the hell are we supposed to do. Bruce reverted to type and went 5 at the back after starting with 4. We didnt quite go to the famed 8-0-2 formation but got close at times.

I cant even blame Donkey for this one as he was one of our better players. That is a damning indictment on the rest of them because Jo was still doing his usual of heading the ball to no-one and letting the ball bounce off him. He created a couple of chances though which might even make him man of the match in this awful performance by everyone involved.

Bruce looked clueless on the sideline. Needs a break if you ask me. A permanent break, but it will only be Portugal or the farm.

  5. I watch a lot of games because American sports are almost unwatchable with all of the ad breaks. NBC show every game on demand for free so I can even catch up late at night if I am bored. We are playing the worst football in the league. 20 minutes here and there doesnt cut it. Neither does a decent showing against the 2nd or 3rd worst team in the league – Watford.

What to do? Will sacking Bruce fix it? Couldnt hurt!!!

Will Danny Mills and Chris Sutton still defend him? How about Danny Murphy and Gabby Agbonlahor. Are we still delusional Gabby? Are any of you watching our games?

Bruce has form for going on death spirals. The Mackems sacked him and stayed up. Villa sacked him and got promoted. Each time with the same players.

Is Graeme Jones up for the task? Doesnt look like it. He has been there during the 3 points from 21 spell.

Toothless in attack and unable to defend.
Is it the players, or the way Bruce sets us them up?
    I think the latter!

  8. The Mag are quoting the stat that Bruce has won 7 of his last 37 games. That is a 19% win percentage and included 2 teams that were already relegated. Sheffield and Fulham.

How can he still have a job?

I want to care, but what’s the **** point ??‍♂️. Same **** different week. Just repost all of the comments from last week.

There is nothing left for anyone to say really is there – nothing will change and Bruce will still be in charge after the break – and will put the same 11 out with the same out come.

I know how Bill Murray felt in Groundhog Day now!!.

Come on Ashley, get your finger out and SACK him!

  11. Better late than never. Ryder finally gets it about right with his ratings. I had wondered out loud on here what scale he was using for a team that had not won and were conceding goals for fun. He was dishing out a lot of 7s and a few 8s under those circumstances. Now he has seen the light.

I think he was giving the 7s for not being as **** as the rest of the team, but that isnt how ratings work Lee. Glad he is finally watching the same games as the rest of us.

  12. What was the point of switching to a back 5 again. They were not swamping our back 4 and at least a 3 man midfield had the potential to help out our front line. I would have done the opposite and pushed either Miggy or Sean further forward. I also may have brought on an actual centre forward who despite his limitations knows the position.

Then there is the press conference. He hummed and hahed about ASMs missed chance. That was not a sitter. The goalie mad a good instinctive save. He didnt even mention the real sitter that was missed at the other end when they hit the bar. He sees what he wants and it is a different game to what I see.

Wolves were marginally the better team but they were there for the taking and for large parts of this game we just played into their hands.

Oh, and Barca are getting beat again. Goodbye Ronald. That appointment was almost as bad and bizarre as Bruce. Can you believe we actually paid compensation to a lower level Championship team for the Cabbage!!!

Will a top level Manager go to Barca. There is talk of Roberto Martinez but he is not a top manager. Xavi. No experience. They mention Pep having little experience, but will lighning really strike twice? They also mention Klopp. Are they serious? He has HIS team at Liverpool and can afford to wait for the Barca job letting someone else do the transition. They wont win anything for the next few years so even if a Manager does well compared to Koeman, then Jurgen can still ride in on his white charger.

  13. An attacking team with a good manager/coach can get away with win one lose on situation, a S**t manager/coach who is defensive all the time will end up with draw one lose one situation and that’s what we have at Newcastle.
A good owner will invest in the team in order to be competitive, a S**t owner doesn’t realise that and that is why we are in the S**t and will stay there!

  16. I am almost at breaking point. Bruce’s babble isnt helping. I dont know what I expect him to say but what he does say is really annoying. He has had 999 games and has only got worse. He is repeating what he did at Villa, you can see it and occasionally a blog or fanzine will print what the Villa fans were saying about him at the time and it is exactly the same as here. As Sharpy says it is like Groundhog Day, but not only from week to week but from job to job. I actually think he might have taken Sheffield Wednesday down. Why does anybody employ this man any more?

Actually, it is like double Groundhog Day because we had a Manager before past his sell-by date and on a downward spiral. Not sure if Schteve or Bruce were ever any good. Brucie always left before he was found out and then moved to another team that he was eventually sacked from. Schteve still gets on TV which I cannot believe. He is a joke figure after England and a joke figure in Newcastle with those lost doe eyes in his press conferences.

At least Bruce didnt say judge him after 10 games. But he did take all of the credit for the 12th place finish which was achieved on the back of wins against 2 relegated teams. Even then, it had a lot to do with other teams’ failures that we jumped up the table on the last day. That papered over a lot of cracks and gave Bruce a relatively easy ride in the summer.

Can I watch the Spurs game? It is between the 2 worst run teams in the PL. All Levy cares about is money and I think he got very lucky during those few years when Spurs were good. Poch told him the squad needed a refresh but he was more intereted in cheese rooms and pints filling up from the bottom of the glass. That stadium will work out in the long-run but as famed economist during the depression John Maynard Keynes said “in the long run we are all dead”. How many have died waiting for a Trophy at NUFC? It looks further away than ever this weekend.

  17. I saw the quotes from Match of the Day and unbelieveably Danny Murphy is still defending Bruce. What will it take Danny? Other pundits seem to have turned even Lineker who tries to be neutral and more so Wright who is a big Pal of Shearers and I think he feels for him, no matter that Arsenal are still struggling. Brighton outplayed them today and I will remind people of what Potter said – that he would not risk his reputation by going to Spurs. That is one of the funniest things i have ever heard in football.

Anyway, I think Simon Jordan is almost there with jumping off the Bruce train. I know they are all blowhards but the more they see the light and stop defending him the closer he will be to leaving. I know they dont watch our games but they do have some influence on other teams’ fans who still keep calling us delusional despite the evidence to the contrary. Where do you think they get that narative from? Bruce’s Pundit Pals and Luke Edwards.

  18. And hang on a minute, I am not done yet. What’s the point of naming an unchanged team because you felt they did well with a fours at the back only to change it back to a 5 with Hayden playing CB which everybody thought he had not played well at the previous week and that was the reason you changed it to a fcn 4. It makes no sense.

If you thought Clark or Fernandez were not pulling their weight, replace one of them. Dont change the system and square peg Hayden into a round hole that he obviously doesnt like playing in. Hell, Krafth would have been better, at least he’s a defender. We also had Schar.

The whole thing makes no sense. Hayden drops back whuch means Longstaff has to drop into defensive midfield. He had his best game in ages last week because he was allowed to play further forward. If Jones went along with this then he is as bad as the rest of these clowns.

Get the people on benefits who are able to start picking this fruit, packing and working in abattoirs. I’d also get the 30,000 refugees we have sat in hotels working and being useful to themselves and the country rather than sitting in hotel rooms and hanging around Tesco’s.

I’m sick of hearing these industries complain about not having workers. They’ve been addicted to cheap Foreign Labour for decades and now there’s a realignment of wages and workers. Time to start paying proper wages and not the minimum wage. Hallelujah!

  20. Same old . . . we play half decent for twenty minutes and the rest of the time we’re rubbish.

Clinical finishing from their lad but I do think Darlow could have done better than just sticking his foot out. We haven’t got one player who’s a clinical finisher!

    Bruce has to go!

  23. Groucho:
Who said Bruce doesn’t do tactics?Admittedly he only has one and it’s unlikely to be in any coaching manual. If you go behind fall back on defence.

They are overthinking it. They went to the back 4 the previous week and it worked apart from some woefull finishing. Why the hell would you go to a back 5 when we all know that that means defending with 8 when the opposition has the ball. Hayden is not comfortable as a defender but he is comfortable as a ball wining and defense shielding midfielder. It completely disrupts the shape and neither Miggy nor Longstaff can defend. They/we play much better when they are further up the pitch.

Who is making these decisions? Is it Bruce and Agnew, because they talk a lot on the touchline. Does Jones have a say? He was talking to Bruce before the change. Maybe he was saying – dont do it. But we will never know.

That was the most annoying and baffling thing about yesterday. You know if you go back 5 then St Max will be isolated because the only one up with him is Donkey. Jo played better but the ball still bounced off him, he still fell over and he still headed to no-one. Tells you how **** the rest of the team were and how low the bar is set for Donkey.

      (Quote)

  24. If you tell any other Manager in the league that tactics are not important and it is all down to personnel they would laugh in your face. This is what Bruce says. What is the point of him then, if all he does is pick the team. He is not even very good at making Subs, quite often putting somebody on for the last 3 minutes when we are losing. That just eats up the closk and is a gift to the opposition manager.

      (Quote)

  25. We all know it takes about a minute to bring on a sub and the Refs NEVER add back the full minute.

      (Quote)

  26. I even think Ugly John Carver would do a better job. The squad was decimated when he took over. Bruce mainly has his goalscorer out but refuses to play his back up. You cant tell me we miss Lascelles. He has been our worst player this year. We might have a win with Shelvey if he had played his 1 good game in 5, but what about the other 4 games. I dont think we miss either of them so Bruce really doesnt have any excuses even though he will say we have big players out.

      (Quote)

  27. We still have Danny’s Mills and Murphy defending Steve Bruce. What planet are they on? There are so many of them now between the papers, podcasts, youtube and many, many TV channels discussing sports. They need to be hyperbolic to stand out but they all think they are funny as well. They think it is “banter” but it is all totally unfunny. It is all inane and sporific.

The worst are the likes of Savage and Dion Dublin who keep laughing at their own “jokes” which are not funny. I listened to a BBC podcast last week and Dublin was doing his banter and said something totally unfunny and spent the next minute laughing at what he said.

The journos are no better. They all think they are comedians as well. The Guardian Football Weekly is probably the worst. They all think they are hilarious. I have stopped listening. Mackem fans Barry Glendenning and Jonathan Wilson are particularly smug and unfunny.

Glendenning is a grumpy old sod who is a failed stand-up comedian. The emphasis should be on FAILED. Like the rest of them he thinks he is funny but is not.

This “banter” culture makes them all think they are funny. I never really saw Jimmy Hill or Bob Wilson trying to crack jokes. They were not dour but they didnt think they were comedians either.

  30. As you might suspect I do not blame Darlow for our goals yesterday. Some “fans” say it was bad positioning. I think it was bad defending and good finishing. The first goal he could possibly have deflected with his leg but I would say he was 10% at fault.

    That’s mean….to 5 year olds.

  34. I wonder what Bruce will actually do for the next couple of weeks. Last time when he went to Portugal his excuse was that he had 6 away (on international duty). Imagine if he was at Liverpool he would have ALL his players away and they would have no rest at all, in addition to them normally having 2 games a week. Then they train for and play the internationals.

I reckon this time that Bruce will consider the optics and the remaining players will get 3 days off. I am actually OK with that, seems like a happy medium. The coaches should be in every day though or at the very least doing remote sessions. Bruce knows about zoom now because that’s where he does his press conferences from so there is no excuse (coward, he should be facing the press in person. How can you be scared of Wor Lee Ryder?).

Our team is a shambles, not knowing if we are playing a 4 or 5 at the back and very often playing players out of position. They need all the strategizing they can get. I am sure Bruce will spend a few days on the farm though. I would give him the next weekend to clear his muddled brain. But if he swans off on weekdays then he is a fool.

He will get murdered by the media after last time and he will need the detective from his trashy crime novels to find the pieces of him.

Anybody with half a brain would have a plan to deal with the inevitable questions. He would have the schedule of when they did in-person training but also the schedule of when they did remote startegizing on zoom to head the journos off at the pass.

There must be some videos of Rafa’s old drills. How about watching a few of those? Good coaches are not afrain to say who they learnt from, who their inspiration was. Rodgers spent weeks at La Masia when he was younger. Pep says he owes a debt to Bielsa etc. Bruce, he worked with Sir Alex FFS and seems to have learnt nothing.

NB: with most coaches I would be OK with having a different startegy in your back pocket and being able to switch. Not with Bruce. He will keep the same players and play them out of position when he makes the switch. He didnt make the obvious switch either when we were a goal down and bring on a real striker. No, he changed the whole shape of the team, and not just the back line either.

I am beginning to hate him. Without a change we are down.

I have nothing against the sentiment, just that is was never going to work. The NUST should be concentrating their efforts on something worthwhile.

That is a good amount of money though, just a drop in the bucket for the purpose they said it would be for. They said if it didnt work the money would be donated to Charity. Now is the time with Christmas around the corner. They should wind the whole thing up and give a 3rd of the money each to The Bobby Ribson Foundation, The Shearer Foundation and The Food Bank.

  36. So, the players had 48 hrs off after Wolves and are back in training Tuesday. My guess is that they will get next weekend off and maybe even a long weekend, beginning Friday. That’s OK with me. 37. With Bruce bragging, and yes it is BRAGGING about his more than 900 games of management experience as how he will overcome the odds and get the job done, I think it is worth asking a few questions. I dont know the answer to most and cant be bothered to compile the stats, but I am just wondering:

    * What is his PL win %. I do know this one, it is 29%. And in the calandar year of 2021 it is 19%

    * What is his PL points per game average?

    * What is his PL goals scored and conceded per game record?

    * What is the average finishing place of his PL clubs including when he was sacked and relegated?

    * How many and which clubs has he skipped town on?

    * How many times has he been sacked in his career?

    * When did he start dragging around the puppies (Steves) with him and has there been a downturn in his results since then.

    * Exactly how many promotions has he achieved compared to years in the Championship. Is his reputation as a promotion specialist warranted?

      (Quote)

  38. This is about my lowest ebb as a NUFC fan. We are almost certain to be relegated. The last 2 under Ashley there was hope until the very end. Rafa should have kept us up with the squad he had but at least it was in doubt until the last few weeks. There was still hope with the Shearer relegation on the last day. I feel we are sleep walking to relegation this time.

I wasnt this down even when Ugly John was manager. Schteve came close because he seemed clueless.

  39. After only 7 games I can safely say that 3 of these 4 will go down – NUFC, Watford, Norwich, Burnley. Burnley have ridden their luck for so long but Dyche has a knack for producing wins from nowhere and when least expected. We all knew that Bruce’s luck would eventually run out and he cannot expect to be bailed out again by Willock scoring 7 in 7.

I think Leeds, Southampton and Palace are not that great but they have better managers than those named above. Brentford might come back down to earth but they look like they have enough.

I am still mad about swithcing to 5 at the back and putting Hayden in there when even he admits he is not a centre half.

Darlow – 6, I am not sure if he could have stopped those goals.

    Ritichie – 1, those corners!!!!!!!!!!

    Manqillo – a 2 and a half.

    Fernadez – 3

    Clark – 4

    Willock – 6

Sean – 6 and 4 when Bruccie sent him back to defense.

    Miggy – 5

St Max – 7, he had 3 Wolves players on him every time he got the ball.

Donkey – 10 for donkey, 3 for any other player.

Wolves hit the bar a couple of minutes earlier when it seemed like it was easier to score. The keeper made a pretty good save for the St Max effort. Brucie is acting like it was an open net.

His press conferences are farcical now. His excuse for no wins are that other teams also have no wins or only 1 win. or that we should have won against Watford. It doesnt work like that Steve. Look at all the lucky points we got last year!!!

      (Quote)

  43. “yes, we got beat, but it wasnt really a loss because St Max might have scored and then it would have been a draw or even a win. Of course I am forgetting their player missed an open net, but we have 3 points and it is the points that count as I said last year many times, many, many, times”.

“5 at the back you say? And Hayden out of position? That’s Graeme Jones’ fault for not smacking me and the other Steves in the mouth”. “It was the obvious move to go 8-0-2 when they were a goal up”.

  44. Q: did we really play well enough to win against any of these teams apart from Watford? Southampton played us off the park for most of that game. Wolves were better than us, same with West Ham and Man U. Where should these phantom wins have come from? This team is not suited to 5 at the back, and still you reverted back to it at Wolves. Why? And you still play the Donkey because you like to hoof it from the goalie. But he heads the ball to nowhere and no-one. He falls over. He cannot trap a ball.

I gave him a 10 in my ratings. But that is on a Donkey scale, where the most he would ever get is a 3 for a normal player. 10 for Donkey means 3 for Jordan Henderson!

Do they have any Armenians on the panel because their Xmas is Jan 12 so they would have to take that day off (I was married to a half-American Armenian). Then there would be an appeal so I wasnt expecting anything until the Jan tranfer window closed.

Should I be thinking about which slimmer manager can take over from Bruce who wont say delighted and pleased as much?

  54. I think we can rule out Ronald Koeman. How the hell did he get the Barcalona job? That is almost as bizarre as Kinnear getting the NUFC job. Twice!!!

  55. Well things seem to have become rather interesting, rather quickly. Not sure what to make of all this. From what I have read most of the speculation seems to be reporters doing the usual 2+2 =? stuff. No actual quotes or the like. I am too worn down to get too excited at this stage. Only time will tell..

  56. Amnesty international now asking PL to seriously consider Saudi human rights. Are they not aware that the PL has a TV deal with Bein and that the human rights record of Qatar is just as bad.

  57. Apparently the Saudis got sick of waiting and went direct to the PL. When they were told what to do, they did it. Free Saudi air space for BEin. $1bn to Qatar.
    Job done in a day.

  58. I’ll get excited when the new Board confirms the deal. Until then, will tentatively wait. It’s about time we caught a break though – could be a big one too.

  59. Rumors that Howe will replace Bruce if T/O happens. Everytime I hear him talk he sounds like Pards and it puts me on edge as I hated Pards.

  60. So many false dawns on the takeover. Can we believe this time? Even Simon Jordan thinks it is on. I will believe it when I here the Dannys say it (Murphy and Mills). They hate NUFC.

Whilst Mike Ashley is not popular on Tynecastle, his legacy for new owners is a profitable club. In last 3 yrs profit £38m, factor in FFP adjustments for academy etc of about £50m & this means the new owners have an allowable FFP loss of £105m plus £88m= £190m+ to play with #NUFC

  62. I was at my lowest ebb on Saturday. That Wolves game depressed me so much because I thought things would never change when we went back to 5 at the back and the last 15 minutes the Corbridge Cabbage seemed like even he knew he was not up to the task. But he wont resign. He is more interested in his bank balance than the club. He also believes his own publicity and his pundit pals.

So I will bring out the cliches. Is this last call in the Ashley Salloon? If it doen’t happen this time are we stuck with a “local consortium” pretending to buy NUFC or even NUST and their pretend bollix of buying 1%? This has gone on long enough, they cant sucker punch us one more time can they?
