My Saudi takeover theory – Should we have seen this coming sooner?

Many, many others have had their say and will continue to have their say on the Takeover, discussing what happened on a crazy week for Newcastle United and what happens next.

Now that it’s through I’m happy to be patient and watch the fallout, but here’s my two cents.

The electrifying pace of what’s unfolded over the past few days has made me think that certain other things that were happening make so much more sense now, and could explain a lot though if things have been going on behind the scenes.

What it also proves is that even those ‘ITK’ really aren’t, as we can never be party to what’s being discussed unless we’re actually there. Things like Ashley and Charnley’s invisibility and silence. The lack of investment over pre-season when we were clearly needed.

Indeed, in all the euphoria of Thursday, I also noticed that once again Lee “Lucan” Charnley was conspicuous by both absence and silence.

Exactly where is he? Is he actually all right? Do we really care? I hope he’s okay and looking forward to his next challenge.

He’ll probably get a substantial pay-off. Not bad for being useless and totally non-engaging in a role that demands efficiency and communication. I mean no-one has even mentioned him since Thursday, which is quite apt. It really does appear he’s disappeared off the face of the earth.

But, like I say. Do we care? Not really. A blind man could see that the lack of investment pre-season, during the transfer window and not sacking or paying off Bruce was hard to comprehend if not impossible to understand.

Easy to say after the event, but perhaps Ashley refused to spend over the summer or pay off Steve Bruce after our winless start because he really did feel this takeover was going through…and quickly!

Bruce himself has looked ever more desperate week by week and some of the bizarre statements he made now make me wonder what he REALLY meant. “Ticking over” seems to make so much more sense now, for instance!

Now that Ashley’s gone, it makes you think, was he just holding the fort – albeit it badly – because he knew new owners were on the way and a payday (which wouldn’t be Ashley’s problem) coming his way when it all went through?

Will Bruce go next and if so who will replace him? Personally I’d bin him now and put Graeme Jones in charge until the new owners find the man they want – and they will. After all, in football, money talks.

One thing’s for certain – we heard more from Amanda et all in one day than we heard from the previous regime in 14 years and furthermore, it was all positive.

Now for the ride we’ve all been hoping and waiting for!

  1. You say we don’t know because we are not there.
Then you claim Charnley was “Not bad for being useless”.
But the truth of the matter is he did his job, and he did it well. Ashley’s brief would have been to just keep us in the Prem and try to run a profit – that’s exactly what he did. Charnley will walk straight into another job no problem.

“A blind man could see that the lack of investment pre-season”, that conveniently fits your theory, but the lack of investment in the other pre-seasons and Januaries does not.

“Not sacking or paying off Bruce was hard to comprehend”? There was no way he was going to sack Bruce as long as he kept us in the Prem. That was the goal. So why would he sack Bruce? Did he sack Rafa when he went 10 games without a win?

Now be serious Jeff – we all knew what Bruce meant when he “Ticking over” , if you’ve just figured it now then you should be going to school in the “special” bus.

Was Ashley just “holding the fort”? You think he was holding the fort for 14 years?

“we heard more from Amanda et all in one day than we heard from the previous regime in 14 years” – of course we did. What did you expect? They’ve done their homework, they are fully aware of EVERYTHING that pissed the fans off about Ashley, and they will go out of their way to show the fans how much better they are than Ashley. Whether it will last or not is another matter entirely.

And finally, if you are going to try to use Latin to impress, you have to get it correct. It’s “et al.” and if you want to be classically correct it has the full stop after it, even in mid sentence.

I read you r article because I thought you were going to give us your theory on why the EPL did a u-turn, and why they went ahead with the CAT, when obviously this was close to being approved.
My theory would be that the Prem did it to save having to pay Ashley out.

You lost me at mocking disabled people.

If you’re going to make your point, at least do it respectfully.

  3. The truth was going to come out, and the Premiere league knew it!
That’s why the deal went through so quickly.
We had the big six breakaway attempt and the lack of punishment, which shows the influence they have, the threat to excluding Newcastle from the competition all shows the Premiere league in a bad light.

  4. You’re right. There were some things that were apparent, which I mentioned in an article about the CAT hearing for another site. Some saw it coming without waiting for January’s arbitration. There were enough clues, particularly in the later exchanges.

  5. Lee Charnley is a competent and very decent bloke. However, he had very limited autonomy working for Ashley who needed to approve anything of significance. He is quite clearly uncomfortable facing the public, and this is a real problem for a Chief Executive of a £150m pa company. It has been stated that he will stay on for a while to assist in an orderly transition.

Personally, I wish him well in whatever he goes on to do.
