According to Sky Sports, Newcastle United are now considering Luis Campos for the Sporting Director role at St James’ Park.
This comes from senior reporter Gary Cotteril, who has just told Sky Sports News that the 57-year-old is ‘keen’ to talk to the new owners about the job, with him currently out of work and eager to return.
The former Real Madrid scout and world-renowned director worked wonders at both Monaco and Lille, building golden generations that saw both become the only sides outside of PSG to win Ligue 1 in recent times.
Here’s a snippet from Sky Sports in the last few moments, confirming the Portuguese supremo looks set for talks with the Saudi-backed consortium:
This comes after the likes of Ralf Rangnick and Antero Henrique have been linked with the Sporting Director job in recent days.
Campos has made over £500m on transfers and is described as ‘The Wizard of Capital Gains’, being responsible for unearthing European gems like Kylian Mbappe, Bernardo Silva, Anthony Martial, Fabinho and more.
What an appointment this could be…
Always thought the guys who do the digging at Monaco and Dortmund were the guys we should always have targeted for hire, even before the takeover. Those clubs have a pretty good track record of finding unbelievable young talent at low cost and selling them for huge profits. Cashley’s dream deals.
The sporting director hire will arguably be more important than the manager hire. But it is crucial the have a sporting director in place who has some say on the manager hire so that everyone is on the same page when it comes to the transfers in and out.
