Danny Murphy throws bizarre name into the mix to replace Steve Bruce – Surely not?

Danny Murphy has thrown Roy Hodgson’s name into the hat for managers who could take over from Steve Bruce at Newcastle.

Many expected the 74-year-old to retire after he called it a day at Crystal Palace back in May, making this an odd suggestion from Murphy to put it mildly.

The pressure turned up another notch on the under-fire Bruce following our 3-2 defeat to Spurs yesterday, a game where we started off brightly before sitting back for 88 minutes and, ultimately, deserving to lose.

Many in the media and supporters – including myself – expected Bruce to be sacked before yesterday’s game, but he remained in the dugout to take charge of his 1000th game as a manager.

Now, talkSPORT pundit Murphy, who backed Bruce following our 2-1 defeat at Molineux two weeks ago, has heralded his former Liverpool boss Hodgson as a possible candidate for the job.

Hodgson took charge of Crystal Palace when they were without a point after four Premier League games and helped stabilise them over the next few years in the division.

Bruce has us sitting second bottom, winless and with just three points from seven games, hardly a “way worse” position than The Eagles found themselves in as Murphy suggested.

Our new owners must address the issue ahead of our trip to Palace on Saturday, with speculation regarding Bruce’s job combined with poor results now making his position untenable.

  1. Danny Murphy continues to pontificate on NUFC when he has zero idea of anything to do with my club. His continual previous support of a below average manager like Bruce beggars belief and now “bigs up” Roy Hodgson as the next manager when he is clearly a (likeable) relic of the old guard of manager. This would be a backward not a forward move end of. Muppet.
