The Mail’s Craig Hope has offered an update on Newcastle United’s search for a new manager, revealing what he was told last night on the ever-changing situation.
He claims that Paulo Fonseca’s short odds as the current bookies favourite are reflective of the fact the new owners have held talks with him, insisting things could soon change once the consortium speak to other contenders.
On the subject of other contenders, Hope has revealed that former Everton boss Roberto Martinez is also in the frame alongside Fonseca.
Not only is he believed to be keen on the job – eyeing a return to Premier League football and a reunion with former assistant Graeme Jones – he has a £2m buyout in his Belgium contract, making him an inexpensive option for the Saudis.
This comes after The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder revealed that Roberto Martinez was interested in the vacant Newcastle United job just a few hours after Steve Bruce was sacked on Wednesday morning.
