New contender set to be offered the chance to become NUFC’s sporting director – Report

Another day, another name reported to be target for the new owners of Newcastle United.

This time it’s Marc Overmars, with De Telegraaf – one of the leading outlets in Holland – stating that we have identified him as a ‘great candidate’ for the sporting director role at St James’ Park.

The former Arsenal legend has done an outstanding job at Ajax since arriving in 2012, overseeing the development of several top young players and recruiting impressively to help deliver a host of titles and that impressive run to the Champions League semi-finals two years ago.

He is contracted to the Dutch giants until 2024, but De Telegraaf claim he is free to leave at ‘anytime’ and looks set to be offered a ‘million-dollar salary’ by the Saudi-backed consortium.

The report also states that he’s previously ruled out a move abroad until his kids had grown up and started high school, however it’s said that ‘obstacle has gone’ – suggesting he’s now in a position to consider our alleged offer.

Overmars is one of several impressive names who’ve been linked with the director of football role that’s set to be up for grabs, with the new owners credited with interest in Luis Campos, Ralf Rangnick, Antero Henrique and Andrea Berta since the £300m takeover went through.

Another one to watch, with it appearing as though the club are determined to recruit at top class director of football above all else.
