Sir John Hall recommends surprise name to Saudis as NUFC search for Steve Bruce replacement

Now here’s an interesting view from a man that made the vast majority of right decisions that the fans applauded during his tenure.

Enter Sir John Hall and his suggestion that we appoint Arsene Wenger as a ‘caretaker.’

On talkSport he said, “I had tremendous regard for Arsene Wenger. He was an intellectual in the game and I’d be looking for the calibre of Arsene Wenger. That’s the kind of manager we need, a thinker and someone who knows which way the game is going.

Sir John is a man whose opinion I always respect and knows the Club as well as anyone, making this a surprising yet equally interesting suggestion to the Saudi consortium.

Would it be that mad an appointment? Not in my eyes but, it does seem as if the new owners don’t want, other than Jonesy, a caretaker and their appointment will be someone they see taking us beyond this season if we stay up.

As present, it appears that Bruce’s replacement will come from one of Favre, Fonseca, or Howe, but then again who knows. The pace that things move with and the unexpected things that happen often surprise us all. I mean who would have thought two weeks ago that we’d have new owners and no more Steve Bruce!

On the subject of Bruce these are my last thoughts. I think some people have been too personal in their comments towards him. But in reality to walk away from a job where he’s 100% under performed with £8m in his pocket means I can’t have a lot of sympathy for him.

As a bloke he seems a good guy and in general people like him as a person. He seems genuine in being a fan of the Club but as a manager he was never ever going to be good enough to get us to where a Club of our standing should be.

We didn’t want him to fail, but the feeling was he would and so it proved. He couldn’t take criticism and responded to fans very negatively and brought a lot of the issues he faced on himself, in my opinion. But he’s gone and personally we need to leave him behind and move on.

That’s it, let’s move on and I’m sure there’s another exciting day of intrigue, rumours and speculation ahead.

  1. Got to laugh at your comments on Bruce, yes his time was up but let’s not pretend we were going anywhere whilst under Ashley, so to say he failed (the start of this season excluded) is harsh when this very blog used to cream their pants about Benitez whose record and playing style almost identical to Bruce.

The fact is this blog and others didn’t like the appointment in the first place and made it clear and wrote many articles slating his management record. Let’s face it there are a lot of managers who don’t get the chance to manage at large clubs so his win record is going to be poor when he is managing a team at the bottom of the PL.

I wonder if he had been Stevio Brucio coming from Serie A if the initial reaction would have been the same. We have had one so called marquee manager under Ashley in Benitez and he was no better than Bruce, he just whined to the press a bit more to get the fans on board and ultimately abandoned us for big money in China.

So let’s hope the new manager whoever it may be whets The appetite of Nufcblog or the knives may be out right away.

Onwards and upwards and here’s hoping we avoid relegation or the plans will have to be redrawn almost immediately!!

  2. Why all of a sudden is there an outpouring of “Poor Bruce” from all quarters?
With the funds he was afforded by Ashley ( who gave Benitez next to nothing ) we went backwards, at least we were competitive under Benitez and our defence didn’t leak goals like a sieve.
The managers with any credibility walked from the job and told Ashley where to shove it ie, Keegan and Benitez, but Bruce carried on waiting for his £8 million pound lottery win and left with whatever reputation he may have had in tatters.
Don’t forget who the biggest villain is in all this, Ashley.!
